Damned If I Do
Damned If I Do: Stories | Percival Everett
3 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Damned If I Do is an exceptional new collection of short stories by Percival Everett, author of the highly praised and wickedly funny novel Erasure People are just naturally hopeful, a term my grandfather used to tell me was more than occasionally interchangeable with stupid. A cop, a cowboy, several fly fishermen, and a reluctant romance novelist inhabit these revealing and often hilarious stories. An old man ends up in a high-speed car chase with the cops after stealing the car that blocks the garbage bin at his apartment building. A stranger gets a job at a sandwich shop and fixes everything in sight: a manual mustard dispenser, a mouthful of crooked teeth, thirty-two parking tickets, and a sexual-identity problem. Percival Everett is a master storyteller who ingeniously addresses issues of race and prejudice by simultaneously satirizing and celebrating the human condition.

vivastory @Branwen It's really striking! 3w
Suet624 @vivastory you‘re right. It‘s a great problem to have. Did you see The New Yorker article about him? He seems like a bit of a curmudgeon. 3w

Getting a head start on #wondrouswednesday!

1. Percival Everett is an author I‘ve long neglected, but committed to read more of this year! His storytelling abilities are exceptional, especially the way he weaves in hard-hitting satire that‘s so on point with human nature.

2. Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson! It was the most surprising of my favorite reads last year. Combustible kids sounded too far-fetched, but I loved it!

3. Tagged!

Eggs Great recommendations! Thanks for joining in 👏🏻👏🏻 4y

I guess I'm on a #shortstories kick. I read and loved "The Appropriation of Cultures" from this collection. This was my intro to Everett & it was a great one! Although I wish I had read him sooner! This was a masterfully satirized challenge to a widely considered symbol of hate. I'm now going to find a copy of the entire collection to read. #satire #bhm #blackhistorymonth #readblackauthors #blitsy
