Pitch Perfect (movie tie-in)
Pitch Perfect (movie tie-in): The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory | Mickey Rapkin
5 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
A musical tale of collegiate a cappella filled of high notes, high drama, and high jinks that inspired the hit films Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2. Get ready to be pitch slapped. The roots of unaccompanied vocal music stretch all the way back to Gregorian chants of the Middle Ages, and collegiate a cappella is over a century old. But what was once largely an Ivy League phenomenon has, in the past twenty years, exploded. And its not what you think. Though the blue blazers and khakis may remain, a cappella groups at colleges across the country have become downright funky. In Pitch Perfect, journalist Mickey Rapkin follows a season in a cappella through all its twists and turns, covering the breathtaking displays of vocal talent, the groupies (yes, there are a cappella groupies), the rock-star partying, and all the bitter rivalries. Rapkin brings you into the world of collegiate a cappella charactersfrom movie-star looks and celebrity-size egos to a troubled new singer with the megawatt voice. Including encounters with a cappella alums like John Legend and Diane Sawyer and fans from Prince to presidents, Rapkin shows that a cappella isnt for the faint of heartor lungs. Sure to strike a chord with fans of Glee and The Sing-Off, this raucous story of a cappella rock stars shows that sometimes, to get that perfect harmony, you have to embrace a little discord. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The plot follows Barden University's all-girl acappella group, The Barden Bellas, as they compete against another acappella group from their college to win Nationals. The film is loosely adapted from Mickey Rapkin's non-fiction book, titled Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate a Cappella Glory. LAST CALL OF PITCHES 😍

“'Vader' in German means 'father'. His name is literally Darth Father.”

“Huh. So you know German. Well, now I know why you don't like fun things. You know, you need a movie education. You need a moviecation. And I'm gonna give it to you.”

WorldsOkayestStepMom I love this movie!!! 5y
RidgewayGirl Father in German is “Vater,” not “Vader.” Maybe in Dutch? 5y
LiterRohde @RidgewayGirl I didn‘t write the book or make the movie. It‘s just a funny quote. Neither the Dutch vader nor the German vater sound exactly like Darth Vader. But they are close. And her point is right. Overthinking it, in another language it means father and it makes the twist obvious. The other character is just thinking about enjoying a movie. 5y

Mehso-so

Yes this book inspired the movie and parts of it were fun enough to read. It follows the exploits of 3 a cappella groups (Divisi, a female group from the U of Oregon, & 2 male groups the UVA Hullabaloos & the Tufts Beelzebubs). The professional aspects of a cappella were too detailed for the average reader so I reckon this is more for diehard fans. (Also no mention of the Gilmore Girls so in which the Whiffenpoofs appear!)

read_diverse_books Loved the movies! But it would never occur to be to read any book tie-ins. Lol 8y
DuckOfDoom I am really suprised the movie was based on a book 8y
