The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill: A Love Story . . . with Wings | Mark Bittner
4 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is the inspiring story of how one man found his lifes workand true loveamong a gang of wild parrots roosting in one of Americas most picturesque urban settings. Mark Bittner was down on his luck. Hed gone to San Francisco at the age of twenty-one to take a stab at a music career, but he hadnt had much success. After many years as an odd-jobber in the area, he accepted work as a housekeeper for an elderly woman. The gig came with a rent-free studio apartment on the citys famed Telegraph Hill, which had somehow become home to a flock of brilliantly colored wild parrots. In this unforgettable story, Bittner recounts how he became fascinated by the birds and made up his mind to get to know them and gain their trust. He succeeds to such a degree that he becomes the local wild parrot expert and a tourist attraction. People cant help gawking at the man who, during daily feedings, stands with parrots perched along both arms and atop his head. When a documentary filmmaker comes along to capture the phenomenon on film, the story takes a surprising turn, and Bittners life truly takes flight. From the Hardcover edition.

Have to share one more. This dude did a double take when he saw us watching, alerted his pals and they all high-tailed it.

Also I just looked up the term for a group of parrots and apparently it‘s a pandemonium. How cool is that?!

Crazeedi They are gorgeous! Where do you live? I cant even imagine my collection of birds including parrots! 3y
squirrelbrain These photos bring back great memories of our visit to San Francisco (in 2009, spa long tome ago now!). We stayed (literally) on top of a house in North Beach and the parrots 🦜 were often hanging around. 3y
BarbaraBB Wow! Where do you live? 3y

KVanRead @Crazeedi @BarbaraBB San Francisco, but they are not native - it‘s believed they were pet or pet store birds that escaped and over several decades have grown to a population in the hundreds. They‘re San Franciscan‘s now though and have become local favorites. 3y

1. So I had to search for something, but apparently the rescuers were supposed to say “I love you” to bond with the parrot. The parrot said I love you back & then told them to F-off and flew away.
2. Harry Potter
