The kind of Vordan is on his deathbed. Soon his daughter, Raesinia, will be the first queen regnant in centuries - and a target for those who seek to control her. The most dangerous is Duke Orlanko, Minister of Information and master of the secret police. He is the most feared man in the kingdom, and he knows an arcane secret that puts Raesinia completely at his mercy. But Raesinia has found unlikely allies in the returning war hero Janus bet Vhalnich and his loyal deputies, Captain Marcus d'Ivoire and Lieutenant Winter Ihernglass. As they thought they would never see again, they help Janus and Raesinia set in motion events that could shatter Orlanko's power - perhaps at the price of throwing the nation into chaos. But with the people suffering under the duke's tyranny, they intend to protect the kingdom with every power they can command, earthly or otherwise.

I enjoyed this a lot but not as much as I enjoyed the first installment if that makes sense. This was a lot less military fantasy and more political wrangling. My two favorite POVs from the first installment were present in this one though along with two new players so it was a nice mix of familiarity and fresh perspectives. I'm definitely going to read on in the series.

Finished my first book of 2019!
I‘m still new to the military fantasy/flintlock fantasy genres but this series continues to be enjoyable. It is definitely a slow-burn fantasy but it is jam packed with political intrigue, secret societies and a bad ass group of female street gang. The magical elements that do show up are so intriguing and I can‘t wait to dive into the next book.

Improvement on the first book. The plot is better and characters have become more developed. It's also interesting to see how the magical forces interact with the normal people in this series.
