The Walking People | Mary Beth Keane
5 posts | 4 read | 13 to read
Greta Cahill never believed she would leave her village in the west of Ireland until she found herself on a ship bound for New York, along with her sister Johanna and a boy named Michael Ward. Greta discovers that in America she can fall in love, raise her own family, and earn a living. Though she longs to return and show her family what she has made of herself, her decision to spare her children knowledge of a secret in her past forces her to keep her life in New York separate from the life she once loved in Ireland, and tears her from the people she holds closest. Even fifty years later, when the Ireland of her memory bears little resemblance to that of the present day, she fears that it is still possible to lose all when she discovers that her childrenwith the best of intentionshave conspired to unite the worlds shes so carefully kept separate for decades. A beautifully old-fashioned novel, The Walking People is a debut of remarkable range and power.

Themes: Family (especially sisters!), Ireland and NYC during 1950s to 2000‘s, Great storytelling!

I was hooked from page 1 of this beautifully written book 🥰 Mary Beth Keane has a gift for amazing storytelling and scenery setting; you‘ll shiver from the rain she describes and feel yourself warm up with her descriptions of drinking tea beside a roaring fire. A definite pick!!!

Good. Even though this is Mary Beth Keane's debut novel and has been out in the US since 2009 it is finally being published here in the UK on 4th March 2021. This book centres on two sisters and the secrets they keep to hold their family together. Throughout this book nothing extraordinary happens but Mary writes in such a way that keeps you hooked to the very end and keeps you longing for more.

Thanks to #penguinrandomhouse for the opportunity to read this book.

The Walking People follows the lives of Irish immigrants to New York. The first part of the novel, in Ireland in the 50s, started off very slowly and it took me a while to become involved but I loved the parts set in NYC.

This is Keane‘s first novel and I didn‘t love it as much as Ask Again,Yes (but that one was one of my faves of last year) but still recommended - 4 stars.

charl08 Still haven't read Ask Again - keep hearing good things. 3y
BarbaraBB Great review! 3y
squirrelbrain @charl08 - both books have had a similar style - perhaps a bit Anne Tyler-ish? 3y
