Beneath a Scarlet Sky | Mark Sullivan

Here‘s my June TBR so far. I like using this tracker every month. I add a few books and set up the acronym/color coding system and then all month, I just start adding books that I‘m reading or what I want to read. I‘ve already finished the first short story for the #noplacelikeholmes readalong and I‘ve already started the tagged book. I made more progress in the audiobook tonight. I have 2 hrs left of the book now.

#TheYellowFace

Hi, Sherlockians~
#2 is coming right up! See link below for additional information + a summary (spoiler alert!). Note: “The Cardboard Box“ was actually published between “Silver Blaze“ and “The Yellow Face,“ but the story was completely omitted in the first British publication of THE MEMOIRS OF SH, and we're following that order. We'll discuss why when we read “Box“ later on.

Here‘s my #bookspinbingo list for June. It‘s still the same list. The only difference is that I added the short stories that I‘ll be reading for the #noplacelikeholmes readalong and I added 2 prompts from the #greekmythologychallenge that I‘m participating in on StoryGraph. I could read a book about an unsolved case or a mystery/thriller for the villain prompt. For immortal character, I could read a vampire book because they live forever.

This dialogue seems oddly familiar

#NoPlaceLikeHolmes

Cuilin Yes. It‘s pretty famous. Used as the title to a Mark Haddon novel. 21h
AnneCecilie @Cuilin That‘s probably why then 19h
bthegood I've never read this book but know that quote, referenced a lot in detective stories/shows😊 3h

Librarybelle I think, to some degree, you need a bit of imagination to ponder scenarios and possibilities. Not everything is in black and white. 21h
CrystalE02 I think it depends on the story. 19h
Aimeesue Indeed. You have to be able to imagine possible ways the events could have occurred before you can figure out if the clues fit into that scenario or not, or if your suspect could have committed the crime in the way you‘ve imagined it happened. They go hand in hand. 16h
dabbe I find this observation by Sherlock to go against his other postulations when he insists on facts, facts, facts. He doesn't read fiction because it's “imaginary.“ Yet now, he believes it's necessary to employ when trying to solve a case. Could this be a case where the character changes his viewpoint somewhat? We do have to see Holmes and Watson evolve over time, don't we? Or do we? 🧐 16h

Cuilin Did Sherlock compliment the investigator? 22h
Librarybelle He did compliment the investigator! To me, Holmes seemed a bit less pompous than in prior stories. Almost human. Almost. 21h
CrystalE02 Holmes seemed like he was more human and nicer in this story. I was sitting there thinking as I was reading this story, did he fall and hit his head. Lol!!! 19h

Read4life I agree. Holmes was definitely more mellow. 19h
Aimeesue Clearly, the country air did him some good! 😂 16h
CogsOfEncouragement I read this collection 12 years ago. I read The Curious Incident… 2 years ago. When I read that sentence this time around I was surprised and amused. 16h
dabbe Watson made some astute observations that Holmes even complimented him on. I want to know if either one of them bet on Blaze. Watson was quite the gambler. 😀 16h

Cuilin I really enjoyed this one. Great storytelling and a double mystery. 22h
Librarybelle I liked this one too. It was a fast read, and there are a couple of instances where Holmes was pleasantly surprised by Watson‘s observations. I was so happy for Watson! 😂 21h
Cuilin @Librarybelle Sherlock seemed “upbeat” was he under the influence??? lol 21h

Librarybelle @Cuilin Maybe he was! 😂 21h
CrystalE02 I liked it!! I did have to reread a certain part of the story when it came to Holmes conclusion. It was fast. 19h
Read4life I enjoyed this one, too. 19h
Aimeesue I enjoyed this one! 17h
CogsOfEncouragement I caught on that the culprit just covered the horse‘s well known markings. I didn‘t critically think about who might have been able to drug the food. I enjoyed this one too. 16h
dabbe To me, this one is the precursor to the HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (my #1 SH of all time) and the setting on the moors of Dartmoor. Dark, brooding, mysterious ... plus we have a horse in this one and a hound in the other. According to THE STRAND magazine, Doyle listed “Silver Blaze“ as his 13th favorite, and the public (who were polled in 1999) listed it as #4. Of all we've read so far, it'd be in my top ten. 🐎 16h
Cuilin @dabbe yes, and the moors are a character themselves. Very moody. 11h
kelli7990 I liked this story. 11h

For #weeklyfavorites, my favorite book this week is Silver Blaze which is this week‘s short story for the #noplacelikeholmes readalong. I started another book called Beneath A Scarlet Sky but I‘ll finish it in June. It‘s a WWII book set in Italy and it‘s based on a true story. I am enjoying it but it‘s intense and it‘s long.

I finished this week‘s short story “Silver Blaze” for the #noplacelikeholmes readalong. I‘m ready for our discussion. I listened while playing Cookie Jam on my phone. I finally got my game progress to sync between my phone and my tablet. All I had to do was update my software on my phone and tablet. I‘ve been playing for years. I‘m on level 1229. I refuse to go back to the beginning especially when it took me years of playing to get this far.
