All That Is Mine I Carry With Me
All That Is Mine I Carry With Me: A Novel | William Landay
21 posts | 19 read | 23 to read
A mother vanished. A father presumed guilty. There is no proof. There are no witnesses. For the children, there is only doubt. From the New York Times bestselling author of Defending Jacob. . . . One afternoon in November 1975, ten-year-old Miranda Larkin comes home from school to find the house eerily quiet. Her mother is missing. Nothing else is out of place. There is no sign of struggle. Her moms pocketbook remains in the front hall, in its usual spot. So begins a mystery that will span a lifetime. What happened to Jane Larkin? Investigators suspect Janes husband. A criminal defense attorney, surely Dan Larkin would be an expert in outfoxing the police. But no evidence is found linking him to a crime, and the case fades from the publics memory, a simmering, unresolved mystery. Janes three childrenAlex, Jeff, and Mirandaare left to be raised by a man who may have murdered their mother. Two decades later, the remains of Jane Larkin are found. The investigation is awakened. The children, now grown, are forced to choose sides. With their father or against him? Guilty or innocent? And what if they are wrong? A tale about familyfamily secrets and vengeance, but also family love and growing upAll That Is Mine I Carry With Me masterfully grapples with a primal question: When does loyalty reach its limit?

Wife/mother disappears, did her lawyer husband kill her? Written from various points of view. The children all have different beliefs and reactions to this tragedy. Fairly good read. I give it 4/5

EadieB I have read Defending Jacob and was looking forward to reading a new book by William Landay. I was not disappointed and found his book to be very interesting. The characters were very believable and real. The plot was one that took me through the book quickly as I had to find out what happened to Jane Larkin. The ending was a twist that I did not see coming and I think you need to read this book and find out what happened to Joan. 5mo

AmandaBlaze Some are really good. However, a lot resort to gore to get their point home. I usually read kids‘ Halloween books in between as a palate cleanser. 7mo

Loved this family involved crime novel. Sometimes the ones left behind do carry all of the guilt and pain. Loved the ending. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I was torn on so-so or pick. I decided pick because I read it in 2 days and it was a page turner. The story was interesting, and I enjoyed the format of how he wrote different perspectives. But one reason I kept reading was I expected more, so in the end, it just felt rather anti-climactic to me, I don‘t know what I was expecting, but it was more. The ending was reminiscent of Where the Crawdads Sing, but not as satisfying.

Mehso-so

Between a pick and a so-so. It was too long, yet held my interest. Additionally, it was overwhelming obvious to me how this would all shake out, but I was holding out for a surprise. Alas, no. Despite these cons, it was a page turner.
A family is torn apart by the loss of their mother/wife who went missing in the 70s. Cold case, court proceedings and estranged family.

Character development was lacking. Talked myself into a “so-so”

Spent the morning at a cafe with an iced latte and my book. The best part? I sat outside under the tinroof-covered patio and it began to rain! It was the perfect reading setting! ☕️ 🌧️ 📖

This book doesn‘t have the pace/suspense of Defending Jacob, but is still an excellent book in its own right. The book is written in an interesting format, divided into “books” told from different perspectives that makes the story more well rounded. Landay knows how to deliver a last minute twist & he doesn‘t disappoint in this regard either. This book is more literary &tells the haunting story of a family marred by the disappearance of its mother

MyNamesParadise Did the father do it like everyone thinks? The book especially shows how it affects children Jeff and Miranda. I enjoyed seeing their characters through the years as there were twists with the case and how they evolved. It would be interesting to see this adapted. I‘m not sure if it‘s work better as a film or mini series. I recommend this one! 11mo

I loved Defending Jacob and this one is almost as good. What happens when your mom disappears and it seems like your dad might be responsible??? So many interesting layers. PERFECT for the beach ( or ice hockey rink 😉) I couldn‘t put this book down. Read it in 24 hours.

KathyWheeler That‘s a fantastic title. I really liked Defending Jacob, so I‘ll have to check this one out. 13mo

This author wrote Defending Jacob years ago, which you may have read or watched the series on tv. Where‘s Jane Larkin, mother of three and wife of a high powered attorney. Dead or alive? It‘s a page turner, much as his first book. The beginning of the book focuses on the family, the middle third speaks in Jane‘s voice, and the end ties it all up. It‘s a chilling portrait of a dysfunctional family, and who they each are in a crisis.

Such intelligent legal fiction! I would say this is a mash up of legal crime plus family drama. A father is the main suspect in his wife‘s disappearance and the case is taken up again when her remains were found decades later. How does a family stay together when one of them is the main suspect even if there is no evidence .. so intriguing and I couldn‘t put this book down!

jlhammar Sounds good! I remember Defending Jacob being a real page-turner, but I haven‘t tried any of his others yet. 13mo

Still snow on the ground, but warm enough to sit out on my balcony and just enough sun left to finish this one. I sort of find his books dull until the bitter end. This one didn‘t make me gasp like Defending Jacob, but still a soft pick for me.

I wanted to scream when I finished this book!! This book was fantastic and it‘s definitely one of the best books I‘ve read this year. I‘ve only read one other book by William Landay and I need to change that asap! It‘s been a while since I‘ve had a book just make me want to scream and I love it. I usually rate my books on a five star scale but I would absolutely give this one ten stars!

MyNamesParadise Yeah this one was quite the journey! I really felt for Jeff and Miranda as we see them over the years, as there are twists in the case. And the end, was just wow! 11mo

Whew- this family drama/mystery unfolds across decades with multiple perspectives & in an immersive style that brings fresh life into this mystery. In a Boston suburb in November of 1975, wife & mother of three seemingly vanishes into thin air. The husband is suspected, but never charged. And lines are drawn for the family members in the aftermath. A compelling, though sad, novel, I couldn‘t tear my eyes away! Would be a great discussion starter!
