I enjoyed this so much! This is magic meets procedural, dry (sometimes blokish) humour mixed with evocative descriptions of the city and its inhabitants. I am hooked and will definitely read the other books in the series

I liked this precisely because it sometimes hit a little too close too home. Claire is a funny anti-heroine of a narrator, looking at relationships and life in London through the (vicious and astute) lens of a quarter-life crisis

Pros: Some good dialogue and amusing over-the-top characters. Cons: the pacing was off and I did not find the killer's motive all that convincing

I joined the Asymptote Book Club and just received my first book surprise! (It sounds very meta but interesting)

What to Read and Why | Francine Prose

Hello Litsy, I still don't know you very well, but I was wondering if you could help me out and suggest some books. Books you loved, books you got lost in. I have been stuck in a rut for way too long and I'm trying to give this app a proper go now!

glitterkitty459 Hi! What kind of books do you usually like? I read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, also lately trying to catch up on some classics. I'm reading Gone with the Wind right now 😁 6y
Shemac77 I really enjoyed Prodigal Summer. Karin Slaughter is always a page turner (for me). 6y
Vik I read a lot of 'literary fiction' and I'm usually looking for humour, strong female characters and poetic language. I also love reading detective and crime fiction, and I devour non-fiction about psychology or politics. I want to get out of my comfort zone and read more sci-fi and fantasy, though (hi @glitterkitty459 😊)! 6y

glitterkitty459 My recommendation for a good fantasy would be The Queen of the Tearling (there's three books in that series) and then the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown for sci-fi 😊 Also do you have any nonfiction you'd recommend? I don't read a lot of nonfiction but I'd like to! 😁 6y
scripturient If you want a cool fantasy/fairy tale story, maybe you can try: 6y
scripturient Another book I recently loved reading was Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. That‘s not fantasy though. ;) How about some Gaiman?? 6y
Vik @glitterkitty459 I just read the summary of Queen of the Tearling and it sounds like a story I want to read right now -- princess turning into queen! The last book of non-fiction I really enjoyed was The Antidote by Oliver Burkeman. He has some interesting things to say about happiness and how (not) to achieve it 6y
Vik @scripturient That all looks pretty spot on, fantasy or not! I trust your recommendations cause all the books in your 'Intro to British lit' (oh god, was that the name of the course? @Heideschrampf ) were really good! I kept all the copies 6y

Slow progress. This book is intense and I need regular breaks from it! I've been reading the first two sections on my commute and they literally made me gasp on the tube. I did not expect such visceral (emotional) violence. Does anybody have any tips for something light-hearted to read next?

Heideschrampf You should try the thursday next books. Very lit-nerdy and deliciously silly 7y
scripturient I love this picture! 😊 7y
Vik @scripturient 😊(I was gonna take a picture on the tube but people gave me funny looks) 7y
