Pickpick

I liked the brisk, no-frills style. It moves along quickly. It is a bit of kitchen-sink when it comes to ideas and plot mechanisms, but I appreciated the evident enthusiasm for them. There‘s a coldness, almost a sadness coming across, I don‘t know if that‘s the author himself or the translation, but that coupled with the themes of destabilization makes it unsettling. I doubt I will keep going with the trilogy but I am glad I read this.

Fun to read Feynman pontificate at length. Wonder if there are more technical but still accessible books of his. Bit of a misogynist, though.

The Odyssey | Homer

Pickpick

Emily Watson‘s new translation of The Odyssey is fresh and a pleasure to read. She wrote iambic pentameter and matched Homer‘s original number of lines, keeping it brisk, focused on the action. Stripped of the overwrought language of the translation from your high school class, it‘s frankly thrilling to connect with this nearly 3,000 year old epic. It‘s not hard to imagine a hypothetical graphic novel adaptation with this as base text. So fun.
