The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel | Diane Setterfield

It was a good mystery book, idk I thought the references to Jane Austen's books to be kind of funny and on the nose.

Really enjoyable read for me. Good YA fiction, which I'm not super familiar with. Definitely worth a read.

It's fine. I didn't like it as much as I thought. I liked the vignettes with Olive as the primary focus, everyone else was really boring. She's just kind of pessimistic and bitter and I find that relatable.

I'll check out the HBO version soon.

"If trouble comes when you least expect it, then maybe the thing to do is to always expect it."

I think a lot of people read into the religious the ea in the book, as if the boy is a direct allegory for Jesus Christ. I didn't read it that way, I saw it more as the boy being able to maintain some goodness where even his father had abandoned it.

"Mm hmm. Yes. It is so."

Surprised at how good this book was. A story of trauma and revenge. But definitely of tenderness and vulnerability.

I didn't read any books until I was gifted this story. I had to teach myself how to read THIS YEAR. It's very close to being absolutely perfect.

And then the pig started walking on two feet... I wish I read this in high school.

"...the thing about portraits is, you need to show people the way they want to be seen. And I prefer to show people as I see them."

This book had great media representation, but average reader reviews. In the end I feel like it was written to become a tv series, so maybe I'd recommend waiting til Hulu releases it next year. If you like crime thrillers, it's kind of like that except without the thrills.

"As I had always feared, no, known, the trials had been for nothing. (The dread of futility has been my lifelong plague.) Excitement, apprehension, release and anger had drained me of mobility. I waited for Fate, the string puller, to dictate my movements."

9/10 because not only could I not put it down, I wanted to listen to it immediately all over again.

I definitely think it is written well, and I definitely think more boys should read it. Unfortunately it's just not for me, I found it to be a little too slow for my tastes. I only read the first half, and was disappointed with the second half (Good Wives).
