This twentieth-anniversary reissue of a timeless collection celebrates the joys of poetry for children of all ages. Bringing together essential classic children's poems with the best of modern and contemporary international poetry, A Child's Anthology of Poetry is an indispensable introduction to literature and life for the young reader The simple pleasures of reading and listening to poetry are unforgettable memories of childhood, and, for young minds, poetry is the gateway to an interest in language and storytelling. From Robert Frost to Maya Angelou, Shel Silverstein to Emily Dickinson, this collection emphasizes the fun and diversity of poetry, providing readers with a well-rounded, inclusive selection of poets. With the guidance of a special advisory board of esteemed poets— Deborah Digges, Gerald Early, Louise Glu?ck, Jorie Graham, Edward Hirsch, Garrett Hongo, Maxine Kumin, Cynthia MacDonald, William Matthews, Thylias Moss, Ishmael Reed, Sarah Rosenstock, and Mark Strand—the editors have fashioned a delightful volume that encourages parents not to underestimate their children's ability to appreciate the music of the written word. It is a volume that will be treasured by generations of readers. Featuring artwork by Tom Pohrt, the wellknown illustrator of Crow and Weasel, and including favorite poems such as William Blake's "The Tyger" and Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky," in addition to more recent classics such as Elizabeth Bishop's "Sestina" and Theodore Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz," A Child's Anthology of Poetry is full of surprises and lyric charm.

April 18, is Poem in Your Pocket Day! Do you have a poem ready for your pocket?

I think I‘ll be using Emily Dickinson‘s I‘m Nobody! Who Are You?, which I memorized in fourth grade courtesy of the tagged book. But, I dunno, maybe I‘ll wear as many pockets as possible and stuff them all! #nationalpoetrymonth #childrenslibrarianlife #poetry

"I Shall Not Pass This Way Again.." This poetry book would be a great addition to a classroom library. It's filled w/ poems that'll connect w/ students' thoughts, feelings & experiences. It teaches children to be good to others in a poetic way *snaps fingers* #ucflae3414sp17 This link explains how to motivate reluctant readers with poetry http://teachersinstitute.yale.edu/curriculum/units/2011/3/11.03.01.x.html

Alisoncavicchi Poetry is one of the hardest genres to get children to self-select I feel. And your resource was great in addressing this reluctancy! I myself hadn't heard of this poetry book, and will definitely check it out 7y
HeyMsBowen I agree with Alison! Kids never want poetry, but having this resource available to them is awesome!! 7y
Mlegg I love that you found a good poetry book! Poetry is so much fun for students to read and such a great way to get them playing around with words. 7y
DrSpalding Wonderful comments and a wonderful anthology of poems. Poetry is usually short and appeals to reluctant readers for that reason. 7y

Something told the wild geese
It was time to go;
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered, - 'snow'.
Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster-glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned, - 'frost'.

All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice,
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.

Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly -
Summer sun was on their wings,
Winter in their cry.

Litlady This looks beautiful inside and out! 💚 8y

I've been trying to find a good poetry book to introduce to my kids that's got a healthy mix of voices and styles, but isn't too heavy or abstract. This one is perfect. From Blake to Angelou, silly to serious, Ravens to Little Red Wheelbarrow and even a Pachycephalosaurus, this is a great starter book to learn to love the sound, look, and feeling of words.
