pickA beautiful reimagining of folklore and Russian history. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy dramatic and tumultuous fairytale romances mixed in with extremely human and relatable characters. The vivid imagery and the homage to folklore is also alluring.
pickThis more personal and tender take on the Trojan war is poetic, while never going over board with its flowery language. Those who enjoy Greek and Roman mythology and legend will appreciate some of the more gentle aspects of the romance and devotion shared between Patroculos and Achilles. Not an extremely difficult read, but an easy and engrossing one.
panUnfortunately, I would not recommend reading this book or the following two in the trilogy. The characters are flat, it‘s hard to understand their motives, and the first person narration is difficult to follow. The most interesting character is reduced to a two dimensional villain by the end of the book and continues that way for the rest of the series. I would recommend Six of Crows instead.
pickSix of Crows restored a love of good and well crafted YA fiction. The market is so often flooded with so-so stories, that stumbling upon Six of Crows was a life saver for me on my commute to work. The story focuses heavily on morally grey characters, good world building, and character interaction above all else. Fantastic read for those looking for fantasy mixed with heist.
