Pickpick

I was in the mood for a good, cozy winter read and this fit the bill. The ending felt a little abrupt, but that could be the e-reader's fault. It traces the story of several generations of women in the same family, with witchcraft as the binding element. Nothing mind bending, but solid and enjoyable.

Mehso-so

A fun, quick read, yet I don't feel compelled to finish the series. The main character felt underdeveloped, like a less complicated (and less badass) Katniss. Can't really discuss the other reasons I didn't like her without being spoilery.

Bailedbailed

I'm in the midst of a cross-country move so right now I need effortless books. The dialogue in this was so contrived and cumbersome, I had to bail. I didn't give it much chance, so maybe I'll try again when I have the energy.

It's been so long, it's like I never read it at all. Which is like getting a second first read.

[DELETED] 2527913457 This is one of those books that I simply don't get. I've read it. I've taught it. And I hate it. I'm glad if it's gets kids reading, though. 8y
Tammygrrrl One of my favorites. 8y
Neenamara I remember liking it, but only read it once. Some very familiar images but so far I have no clue where the story is going! The perks of getting older! 8y

Pickpick

Wow. An engrossing take on vampires. It's a slow burn, becoming the type of book to read quickly for the story and then again, slowly, to take apart and digest all that Butler has to say about humanity and belonging. I'll be mulling over this for ages. Loved it.

A lot of YA seems like it's marketed that way only because of the protagonist's age; the books themselves are universally appealing. This wasn't one of those. It was a quick, fun read but I would've enjoyed it a lot more if I was its target audience.

Do extremely dated references pull anyone else RIGHT out of the story?

BookFreakOut Anything with celebrity or political figures that are "modern" jar me right out of the flow. I found one once that referenced a celeb couple that wasn't even together anymore, and I don't even follow that stuff. It was bad. :P 8y

Wavering on this one. There were Gaiman-esque elements, but Wendig has his own voice. It was enjoyable but overall something didn't click. Sort of interesting start to a series, though, so I'd probably continue and see if it bears fruit.
