The Velveteen Rabbit | Margery Williams
post image

This picture book told through the perspective of a toy is an excellent example of TL. Margery Williams Bianco and Charles Santore bring this story to life, making it a good choice for a RA. The Velveteen Rabbit defines the word “real” and explains that a toy becomes real from the love of their owner. This timeless classic engages younger students as they make self-to-text connections as they read about a boy and the life of his toys.

This version of the TL story is written by Paul Galdone. Depending on the age of the students, this text can be used for many activities, but using it for DR can be simultaneously beneficial and fun. This is the original version of the Three Little Pigs. Three pigs are sent off in search of their fortune. However, they need homes to live in.

kkidwell Each pig decides to create their home out of different material. The first pig chooses straw, the second chooses stick, and the third chooses brick. Although they all three encounter the “big bad wolf”, only one manages to outsmart him. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

This B text was created by Scott Kelly with the aid of Andre Ceolin. Due to the vocabulary and nature of the text, the GR strategy would be most effective to aid students‘ comprehension. This book is interesting because it is a mixture of illustrations and real-life photographs of Scott Kelly‘s journey. The text displays the main events of his life leading up to him deciding to travel into space.

Created by Joe McGee, this SF picture book is the sequel to Peanut Butter & Brains. Perfect for a RA due to the humor of the story and the detail of the pictures. kkidwell Some of the town‘s residents attempt to solve the problem by introducing peanut butter to the equation. The focus is then turned to creating the best sandwich ever. This story can teach the value of community in a humorous, out of this world context. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
