I first read this book back in '95, a friend gave it to me as he did not enjoy the book - being in high school in a remote town it took me 4 years to find the next in the series -during that time i reread this a dozen time, the wheel of time to this day remains a firm favourite

When i first read this book i was not pleased to be doing so, it was an enforced pre-requisit before being allowed to read the lord of the rings. After reading it i was happy i had done so - not only is it an entertaining and enrichening tale in its own right, it adds a lot more depth to its sequal

The Hobbit | J.R.R. Tolkien

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hold, and that means comfort.

I first learnt of this book via the David Lynch film, though the first in a series I have yet to read beyond this, which is my favourite sci fi book, yet ends in a self contained way which has never left me with a urge to go beyond this tale. I do intend to do so one day, but currently in no great rush
