Why am I more interested in the audiobooks in the teen section? 😝

A wintry day makes me want to huddle up in a library, reading a book with perhaps a hot mocha.

Burning Midnight | Will McIntosh

Pickpick

Burning Midnight is a fast reading YA novel that's great for Pokémon lovers or anyone who loves to collect things. Mysterious spheres have appeared on Earth, hidden in various places. If you find 2 of the same color you can "burn" or ingest their powers into your mind. Some colors are bountiful, others more rare. Sully & Hunter are two kids obsessed with hunting down the rare spheres in Yonkers. Good solid fun!

Dune | Frank Herbert

Feeling a bit stuck in a rut. Haven't read a novel in over 6 weeks. Perhaps because I am between jobs & worried about future? Came to Philz to try reading here. I see all these people out on weekday & wonder, why are they so free? Are they wealthy? Some are spouses w kids, I get that. Others people, writing or hacking? Does any of them worry about dry reading spells? Is there a Vigra-like drug to stimulate my mind for a 6 hour reading binge? 😩

Dune | Frank Herbert

Dune was the novel that turned me into a science fiction genre fan for life. I read this first when I was 13 years old. Lately I have been thinking that I need to re-read it, but not just any paperback version or ebook, but in the Chilton edition from 1965. I found the first 4 books in the Dune series on eBay. This One has a near perfect jacket & ultra white pages. A physical book connects us to many things besides the story within.

Today is the birthday of Jack Kirby, who created legions of superhero characters for Marvel & DC Comics from 1940 - 1980s. He would have been 99 years old today. This is like a holy day for me. I like to take some Kirby comics out of the shelf and read some magic. The Fourth World Series is not well known yet - after the Justice League movie it may hit the zeitgeist.

Wife shopping, me reading Purity on a Kindle with a strawberry lemonade iced tea in a nearby Starbucks. When she's done I will pick her up, door to door service.

Intrigued by the first few pages of this novel, definitely plan on buying it soon & reading it. The book design is great: a greyscale photo on an embossed binding. They don't make hardcovers like this anymore. It's wonderful.

The Sandman Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones | Neil Gaiman, Frank McConnell
post image

Our office in San Francisco at EventBrite has a library where I often work. The quiet & solitude help me focus. But occasionally I glance over to the bookshelves & find something distracting...like The Kindly Ones. Would you believe I had all the comics & sold them? Now I want to read them again. 🤔

One of my favorite novels is this masterpiece by Michael Chabon. I especially love it because I am a comics fan, well versed in the history of the industry & he brought a lot of research + love into this story. Chabon signed it for me back in 2001 at Wondercon, when it was still local in Oakland.

Sydsavvy That's cool! 8y

My bookshelf at home. I was about to buy bookends and realized my Iron Man & Thing statues were heavy enough to provide support! One of the most beautiful book designs has to be Six of Crows.

My haul from Bay Area Book Festival today. Some old / free (at the Lacuna of books a great open market of old hardcovers & paperbacks), some new including Richard Russo's new book (got him to sign it) & Jonathan Lethem signing Fortress of Solitude! Spent way too much on books today, gotta read now!

Nice selection of books at Depot Bookstore & Cafe in Mill Valley. I wish I could run a little bookshop like this. Very interested in buying The Last Bookaneer, wonderful premise about a literary pirate who steals manuscripts in 1890. The typesetting in the paperback edition is very stylish!

Luna: New Moon | Ian McDonald

Pickpick

Luna: New Moon is a wild SF soap opera, literally like Dallas / Dynasty on the moon. It features 2 families who made empires out of mining on the moon, the Cortas and the MacKenzies. The first generation made the money & younger gen must keep it. Seems like everyone is bi-sexual on the moon! A romp!

Wow, even better than I had imagined! I have said it before, but I love the idea of taking a fantasy world and seeing how it develops into a pre and post industrialized society.

KtheBookwyrm Have you read the rest of the Cosmere novels and short stories? 8y
Giantsizegeek I read Mistborn Secret History which was a shocker! Started putting together more of the Cosmere after that. I want to re-read Mistborn & Way of Kings & Warbreaker & Elantris! 8y
