When Breath Becomes Air | Paul Kalanithi
Pickpick

A beautiful, heart breaking, and profound look at life, death, and medicine by a neurosurgeon resident turned cancer patient. Kalanithi's work reflects a man well-read and filled with potential, someone who would have surely made a dent in the world, and whose life was cut too short. It's impossible not to admire his courage and clarity in facing death. His brilliant memoir drips heavy with parallels and insights. Simply timeless.

1984 | George Orwell
Pickpick

Orwell is such an intuitive writer to be able to draw on the underlying patterns of oppression and bureaucratic control from Burma to modern society. This book is important and should be more highly read as it warns and educates through its satirical dystopian style on issues such as surveillance, freedom of privacy, speech, legal and judiciary injustice, corruption, etc. Very deep and yet simple and profound.

Enlightening look on child development and the effects of trauma, especially the negative, later in adolescence and adulthood. I would highly recommend for those interested in mental disorders or destructive psychological behavior.

Night | Elie Wiesel
Pickpick

A must-read tale on both the depths of depravity capable of humanity and the strength of the human soul. Wiesel leads us on a melancholy and shocking journey of survival and pain, reminding us of the bad and yet the good we are capable of. It's quite eye opening and reminds us to be more empathetic; because, without empathy, we are monsters.

Alicia | Alicia Appleman
Pickpick

If you're looking for the top 10 books by Jews during the time of WWII this should definitely be on the list. It's a harrowing true account of courage despite the most miserable and depressing circumstances. Horrific, yet inspiring and informative, hopefully this book will serve to educate as well as warn us on the violent and destructive nature of prejudice and ignorance.

And Then There Were None | Agatha Christie
Pickpick

Near the top of my list in the thriller/ mystery category. Perfect amount of detail to lead you on a psychological journey of suspense and intrigue. One of Christie's best works. You won't be able to put it down.

In this informative page-turner, Salman Khan makes deep philosophical concepts on education understandable and brings home the problems that plague the flawed public education system. He writes in an engaging, concise and logical manner. The book really brought to light many fundamental misconceptions on our priorities and perspectives in the education. Definitely recommend for all parents, guardians or educators.
