A Man Called Ove: A Novel | Fredrik Backman

Pickpick

My first inclination was that this was going an emotional tale about an old man who has lost his wife, and must find a way to get on with his lonely life. Ove is not a character that we should love; he is grumpy, miserable and skeptical of everything but he is also non-intentionally funny. I loved the flashbacks to Ove's youth and life with his wife, Sonja. It is in his poignant reflections of her that makes my heart hurt the most.

Another adorable novel by Sally Thorne. It is hard not to love the characters and laugh along with their insecurities and hilarious outbursts. I felt it wasn‘t quite as good as “The Hating Game” and Darcy was a bit too brash for me to be able to fully embrace her. Nevertheless, I laughed and I loved and will patiently wait until Thorne‘s next novel... and I would happily read her grocery lists in the meantime! More more more!

Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover

Pickpick

Educated is so heartbreakingly similar to Jeanette Walls‘ “The Glass Castle”. I am astonished that Westover decided to write her memoir at such a young age and I have a strong premonition that this is not the end to her pain. While I loved the clarity of her writing and praise her bravery, I feel that this memoir was written as part of her therapy in an act to release her guilt and allow herself to heal.

Tadams4 Very succinct review! So nice! 5y

The Hating Game was hands down the funniest book I've read, ever. I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked it up right before bed but I knew after the first few pages that it was going to be good. It wasn't the dim light of my phone as I read that woke my husband up at 2 am, it was the incessant stifled giggles that had the bed shaking for hours (TMI?)Just do yourself a favor, read this book, laugh a lot and fall in love with these two.

Oh wow, how good is this book?! I‘m afraid to finish, as I don‘t know what I could possibly pick up next that could compare 😞 Any suggestions?

Bird Box: A Novel | Josh Malerman
post image
Pickpick

I‘ve read and find myself intrigued by post apocalyptic type books, but this one was PURE EVIL! Very similar to novels Blindness and The Road, Bird Box takes it to another level. A page (and stomach) turner right until the very end, and leaves us hoping there is a possible sequel (re: Where is Gary?)
