Age of Innocence | Edith Wharton
Mehso-so

Although beautifully written, this novel clearly demonstrates that the gap between the haves and have nots so long ago was no different from present day. What was scandalous then wouldn‘t rate the bat of an eye today.

The Stranger | Albert Camus

The most monumentally boring book I have ever read. Perhaps my brain hasn‘t evolved enough to appreciate this “classic.” Don‘t waste your time.

Their Eyes Were Watching God LP | Zora Neale Hurston
Pickpick

A compelling depiction of the growth of an uneducated yet determined young black woman long before the civil rights era.

Age of Iron | J. M. Coetzee

The actual story, while compelling, could have been told in half the number of pages. The author's ramblings were distracting and, for me, detracted from his message.

Homegoing: A novel | Yaa Gyasi

An engaging story with a powerful message. Beautifully written. A must read.

Beautiful Ruins | Jess Walter
Pickpick

Walter runs the gamut of your emotions-- and surprises abound. A delightful read with lovable characters. A heartwarming story.

The Executioner's Song | Norman Mailer
Panpan

At over 1000 pages it was painful to get through this overblown saga. Elevating a psychopath and his slut of a girlfriend to folk hero status demonstrates Mailer's quest for noteriety. That this book received lauditory kudos as high journalism is ridiculous. 200 pages max would have been totally sufficient. Don't waste your time.

Cannery Row | John Steinbeck
Pickpick

Steinbeck is just the best at molding his characters and making you love them. The description of the first party for Doc is hilarious.

Sanders eloquently mixes historical fact with mystery fiction in a macabre period piece that keeps you turning pages. Who knew Resurrection Men was a career?

Fly the Hindenburg with a combination of fact and fiction to its ultimate demise. Part history and part mystery--enjoyed the journey and Lawhon's unique character and story development.

The Plague | Albert Camus
Pickpick

Although this was about bubonic plague, it is an in-depth treatise on the human psyche when people are in forced confinement. Not a quick read, but food for thought for big city dwellers.

Under the Dome | Stephen King
Mehso-so

Typical King and while I enjoyed the premise, by page 500 I wished he would have wound it up.

Adam_Z Agreed. I don't mind a long book, but this dragged on too long. I was never really bored with it, but somewhere around 600-700 pages I was thinking this should be wrapping up soon... But it wasn't :P 8y

Hostage | Elie Wiesel

The story jumped around a lot and did not hold my interest. Not Wiesel's best work.

Hannah is a master storyteller. Her character development is second to none.

Bel Canto | Ann Patchett

The unlikely combination of opera, terrorists, and hostages who fall in love with the music and each other are interwoven in this beautifully written novel by Ann Patchett.

The Paris Architect | Charles Belfoure
Pickpick

Like The Nightingale, this takes place during WWII in German-occupied France. It is a fast read because you simply cannot stop once you get into the story. Suspense, intrigue, brutality, compassion -- they're all there. Belfoure's characters show the full range of human emotion under stress.

The Call of the Wild | Jack London
Pickpick

Just finished The Call of the Wild and The Sea Wolf. Experiencing man's cruelty and humanity through an animal's soul provides a unique perspective and London did it masterfully.

todd I need to re-read this while the coyotes circle and howl our "new house," as Jane puts it. 8y

Tim O'Brien brought home the horrors and senselessness of war. Although this was Viet Nam, the experiences of these young men could apply to any armed conflict. Old men wage war, young men pay the price. Reads like a diary and flows like a novel.

Struggling through this one. Not even a close second to "Mockingbird."

jeff This one was a bail for me! Reads more like a draft of a story than a novel. 8y
LitHousewife Bailing was the right choice, @jeff I should have followed my instincts. 8y

Ho hum. Only 88 pages so a quick read but not the "page turner" it was made out to be.

A real page turner. You can't be dry eyed at the end. Can't wait to read more be Kristin Hannah -- a superb writer.
