How to Be Black | Baratunde Thurston
post image

I have decided to start #projectwoke for myself. Whatever else I'm reading, I commit to be reading something that helps me understand better what it's like to live as a person of color in this world and this country. Books may be fiction or non. Suggestions and companions are welcome.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think that sound like a project for me! 10y
Imagineannie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa cool! Im@starting with Thurston's book because I have it already. Let me know what you read? 10y

Imagineannie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just put a hold on that via Overdrive. 10y
BookishShelly Jam on the Vine is great for showing the current problems for black people are not new and how bootstrap theory is difficult when racism is involved. Historical fiction with notes in the back to show which details actually happened. 10y
Caryl I want to do this, too. Ditto Octavia Butler's Kindred. Two YA recs: How It Went Down and All American Boys. 10y
Mayread Also read Coates' case for reparations in The Atlantic. 10y
Imagineannie @shawnmooney thank you! All added to list. 10y
Imagineannie @Caryl thanks for the suggestions. And will you consider a #projectwoke tag where appropriate so I feel like I have company? 10y
Imagineannie @Skiles thank you so much. The Coates article I've read (kind of a lot) and everything else I have or will find. 10y
Mayread Oh! Also Coates was at the Lapl in conversation w Robin D G Kelley from UCLA. They recorded a podcast of the event-- you should check it out. Not only was their talk tremendous, but I scribbled down a massive reading list as a result. Look for it under LAPL Aloud. 10y
BookishFeminist Love the hashtag idea--also I haven't posted about this for a while and can't remember if you saw it, but I'm working on a feminism/social justice book club on Litsy-- @LitsyFeministBookClub. I'll be focusing on diverse/intersectional reads & topics. Might be a good companion to #projectwoke! 10y
BookishFeminist Some of my reading suggestions: Just Mercy (Bryan Stevenson), Pushout (Monique Morris), Democracy in Black (Eddie Glaude Jr.), anything by James Baldwin, bell hooks, & Toni Morrison, Negroland (Margo Jefferson), Blackballed (Lawrence Ross) & 10y
Laura317 Unashamed by Lacrae was quite eye opening for me. 10y
Imagineannie @Skiles on it!! 10y
