A fabulous historical murder mystery! Who killed 1930s screen starlet Lulu Wong? The Chow sisters (Gemma, May and Peony) are determined to find out. Fantastic writing, and stellar plot and character development. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

4.2⭐️ it‘s listed as horror, but it doesn‘t feel like horror. Let me rephrase that, it feels more like lovecraftian horror. I also feel like the plot needs to be tightened up a little bit on this one, but I really enjoy the writing style in general, despite it being occasionally jumbled. Based on the characters in this book, the jumbled writing actually connected well though. I liked it a lot… Enough to immediately go buy a book 2.

Unofficial title translation: The Gipsy Bride

I‘ve been craving a thriller and also something in Spanish, so decided to pick this up…and I‘m hooked! Loving the short chapters and already invested in the characters and the murder case.

Best part: I‘m late to the game and this is a series and there are 5 books out already 🙌🏽

#BookSpinBingo time!

My two mainstay perpetual challenges are the books of Louis L'Amour and Stephen King.

But I have a few on my backed up challenge list.

I do have two reading lists I'm working on so...Goodreads 50 Greatest Childrens Books and Medieval Historical Fiction lists are going to be my selection for this month.

Anne will get me completed for the Goodreads challenge-but I'll read it after summer reading program!

I read the first in this volume, Laura by Vera Caspary, after viewing the 1944 film by the same name. It was fascinating to read the book knowing the twist. I think because the book is from multiple perspectives, including the killer‘s, it added to the overall experience of the characterization and kept me riveted. Both the novel and the film get a thumbs up! #screenadaptation #filmnoir

Everett has a way of writing characters that just draws me in, even if the plot confuses me. I wish I could identify what it is he does because it's really effective. I really enjoyed this one, although when I got to the third story, I wondered if I'd been reading the whole thing wrong. In the first and third stories, Ogden had been in the army, and in the second, he'd been in the Marines; I assumed this was an oversight, but now I'm not sure.

ImperfectCJ I could be annoyed at having the rug pulled out from underneath me, but something about how Everett writes has me looking around for what I might have done wrong to get me confused. That speaks to the trust Everett builds between author (or at least story) and reader, I think, because I usually have no problem getting irritated at an author if I'm feeling confused. 3w

After a long day helping set up the high school gym for the Grad Night party, having an awesome time subbing a prealgebra class, and playing tennis with my spouse, I have a precious few minutes to read the tagged under a lovely sky before my kid is done with orchestra rehearsal.

Six better than last week. This list is killing me! 🤣 For my 3 faves, I went to book noir: two Hammetts and one Chandler.
1. THE MALTESE FALCON: “And when you're slapped you'll take it and like it.”
2. THE BIG SLEEP: “You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, and you were not bothered by things like that.“
3. THE THIN MAN: “Nora: “How do you feel?“
Nick: “Terrible. I must've gone to bed sober.”

ChaoticMissAdventures I have a canvas print of Maltese Falcon I loved the vibe of the book! 3w
dabbe @ChaoticMissAdventures How cool is that? You need to post a pic! I loved the book and movie so much that I taught an American film noir unit to my juniors as a reward at the end of the year. They loved it! To have them come into the room before class started and voluntarily talk about what they thought was going to happen next was priceless! 😍 3w
