Pickpick

Paola Santiago is a 12 yr old who likes things that are real and proven by science. She doesn‘t believe in the stories her mother tells her about La Llorona to keep her away from the river. Then one night her world is turned upside down.
This middle school age book was a first for me but I had to read it because I also grew up in the same stories that Paola has. It was really well written and brought back so many childhood memories for me.

Tigers, Not Daughters | Samantha Mabry

The Torres sisters dream of escape. Escaping their neglectful, needy father and their San Antonio neighborhood expectations, until the oldest, Ana, falls to her death.

I was always weary of magical realism books, after reading a few I really love them. This one did not disappoint. There is a lot going on with the sisters and this story deals with it all: trauma, grief, female empowerment and ghost. Great writing done in each sisters POV.

Lobizona: A Novel | Romina Garber

Some people are illegal. Lobizonas do not exist. Manuela Azul is both.

This story follows an Argentina lore about the seventh child being a Lobizone or Bruja (werewolf or witch) which is based on genders, men are lobizones and women are brujas. I really loved this magical realism and fantasy world. The characters and space the author wrote were beautiful and very vivid.

I can‘t wait for the second book!
