Well it certainly unsettled me! It's a powerful reminder of how rapidly everything can unravel, in an inescapable disaster-cascade, for people who are already marginal. (The fact that Jeanie and Julius are exactly my age upped the anxiety, too.) I do think it tipped into bathos about three quarters of the way through, and I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, but otherwise it was a top-notch read.

Tamra I loved this one! I thought the title was perfect. 👌🏾 (edited) 1mo

A novel about sacrifice and risking everything for the ones you love. A remote Appalachian setting will always be a way to entice me to pick up a book, and this one delivered on that! However, the best part about this book is the ending.

Hooked_on_books A good ending is the best! Plus, I find this cover very enticing. 2mo
CBee Yes! The ending had me tearing up and I even went back and read it again ♥️ 2mo
BarbaraBB Such a great read. And that ending is 👌🏽🤎 1mo

This was GREAT. I felt the atmosphere, the tension, the love, the uncertainty. Absolutely LOVED the ending. Thanks for putting this on my radar, @BarbaraBB 😘😊

Prairiegirl_reading I had this on my tbr but decided for some reason to take it off. I keep seeing it and always think that it sounds good. Why would I have removed it? Is it violent? (edited) 2mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit I just read this! It turned out differently than I expected (a good thing!). My only criticism is that although I understand the emotion that prompted the dad to adopt that lifestyle, I couldn‘t help but think of what an unfair situation it was for his daughter. 2mo
BarbaraBB Very happy you loved it too! 🩷 2mo

CBee @Prairiegirl_reading I wouldn‘t say it‘s violent. A few violent moments but it didn‘t turn me off, and I‘m squeamish about that stuff. 2mo
CBee @CindyMyLifeIsLit oh, I agree! I thought it was unfair too. I don‘t think he could see that he had any other choice though - his judgement was very clouded. 2mo
Prairiegirl_reading @CBee thank you! I‘m adding back to my list! 2mo

I loved this book, all of it. Cooper has been fleeing from his past and is raising 8 year old daughter Finch in the remote Appalachian woods. Once a year a friend brings supplies and there‘s a hermit neighbour somewhere nearby but mostly they are by themselves. Until the moment the books starts.
What a loving and atmospheric read and that perfect ending… tears in my eyes. Loved it. Thanks for bringing it to my radar, Meg 🩶

The nonfiction mood reading continues with a harrowing survivor story. Misty Griffin's journey to her current life is remarkable. You feel her frustration with how the Amish lifestyle protects repeat offenders from repercussions.

This was an intense read that was only possible to finish because I knew she got out. #nonfiction2024

Reggie I just read Christmas at the Amish Bakeshop this past December…..so do I want to read this?……. Stacked. 2mo

Hart, Gibbs and Cline are the maintenance crew at The Northern Institute, a closed research facility. Gilroy, a researcher is also there. One day the crew notices a “thing in the snow“. As they start to obsess about it Hart seems to unravel. Told from Harts perspective, the story has the reader question the reality of everything occurring. The ending is open - no clear answers to some things. Overall a good read.
Make a great day everyone ☃️

After a slightly slow and unsure (on my part), it picked up and I was riveted. Beautiful writing, quite sad but also hopeful. I loved Jeanie but I think Maude the dog is my favorite character 😂♥️

Tamra I loved it too! 5mo
jlhammar My favorite Fuller! 5mo
CBee @jlhammar I know many didn‘t like The Memory of Animals, but I actually did and wanted to read more by Fuller. What‘s your second fave? 5mo
jlhammar My second fave is her debut (edited) 5mo

Meh. I think the atmosphere was the high point of this one. The mystery was sort of all over the place, and there were some things that seemed out of place within the story.
