I used to teach the Iliad & the Odyssey in HS, but our then new curriculum director took it out of the curriculum with the exception of honors classes. It makes me sad because although the poetic language was difficult initially, we read aloud an abbreviated version. The freshman were really engaged, & not just because of the mythical creatures, but because they came to understand its relevance (video games, the heroes journey,Nike & Hermes, etc.).

dabbe That is super sad. Kids who might not be at the highest reading level can still enjoy challenging books; that's what the teacher is there for, to guide them through that challenge. Kudos to you for exposing all the students that you could to the two oldest pieces of western literature that we have. ❣️ 13mo
TheBookHippie They took it out here as well. Makes me so sad. I do the graphic novels with them a little sneaky 🤣♥️👏🏼 13mo
Bookwormjillk My son read The Odyssey this year and didn't hate it. He's in 9th grade, and not a reader.

Know what he did hate? Agatha Christie. Go figure.

kspenmoll @Bookwormjillk Glad to hear he didn‘t hate it! That says something about the the book‘s timelessness. 13mo

Reggie I took 9th grade Greek mythology with Mrs.Gunderson. I still those stories to friends and coworkers when I need them to understand something or just for entertainment value. 13mo
kspenmoll @Reggie I am happy to hear that you are still sharing these stories! 13mo
GingerAntics It is so sad how they are removing classics from the lives of our children. 13mo
