Outline: A Novel | Rachel Cusk
post image

October was the month of the epic and/or intense read for me. Although slow, it was full of excellent reads. Outline was definitely the stand out, and a top quality buddy read at that! The new Kingsolver and Zusak‘s were absolute treats. I was a fan of the two polarising Booker shortlisted novels I read. Our #indiebuddyread was perturbing but thought provoking. November is set to be the #readharder catch up month!

Redwritinghood Looks like you had a great month! 5y
ClairesReads @Redwritinghood thanks Jerrie- I was challenged and interested by everything I read this month. It was a rewarding reading spell 5y
BarbaraBB Sounds like a good month! 5y

Redheadrambles You beat me to the wrapup ! What a good month for you 👍🏻 5y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles it‘s the first time ever- normally yours remind me to do it! It has been a good month- not the highest read count, but I got something out of everything I read, which was awesome. Looking forward to hitting #readharder this month. 5y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads looking over your books there is some high page count chunksters in there ! So impressive during term time 😀 5y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles there was definitely a “chunky” phase there in the middle- although admittedly I tackled those in the recent break. 5y

Mehso-so

#indiebuddyread This book was written to commemorate his deceased brother who was born with Down syndrome. He wanted to highlight how we all see the world differently and to come to terms with the prejudice and abuse his brother was subjected to because of his condition. I understand what the author was doing here and respect Jesse Bell, who is incredibly smart, but the reading experience was a bit boring. Beautiful message and writing, but slow.

mklong Great review Jerrie! I‘m hoping to spend some time with this one today. 6y
Redwritinghood @mklong Thanks! I look forward to discussing with the rest of the group next weekend. 6y

Schmidt, does an excellent job of building a claustrophobic, uneasy atmosphere. The foregrounding of this atmosphere is the basis for tension in the novel- and I found the repetitive nature of these descriptions reinforced for me, how important this toxic environment is. This really is a novel about how small, important things left unsaid, issues and memories unattended to, build up, and create an environment where such an horrific crime can occur.

Redheadrambles Did you do those nails especially! It‘s the perfect shade 😀 6y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles it was coincidental but conveniently perfect for this shot! 👌🏻 6y
Neale I liked the purple better, it‘s my favourite colour. Boy did I cop some flak as a kid over that. 😊 @ClairesReads 6y

A re-read in preparation for the #indiebuddyread #indiebuddyreads Madeline Miller month. I‘s a fantastic book. I actually like it better than Song of Achilles, but then along with David Mitchell, McCullough is my favourite author. 😊

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Stars. A very solid debut, with some skilful writing and an eerie claustrophobic setting maintained throughout the whole novel. “Booo, boooo, hisss!!!” Don‘t mind that, that‘s just the other members of #indiebuddyread who disagree. 😂😂😂🤣

Redheadrambles Lol ohhhhh 😢 I don‘t think the entire jury on this one is in yet ? We do have some strident dislike and I actually think that could be where I end up but I don‘t think you will be alone .... is this our first major disagreement?? 6y
Redwritinghood @Redheadrambles I‘m on @Neale ‘s side with this one. The writing was great and the feel of the book was so uncomfortable, which really brought you into the story. 6y
Neale Nice @Redwritinghood, I thought I was going to be in the corner on my own. 😊 6y
Neale Everybody was going on about being disgusted and listing disgusting sentences when that is the whole point, the reader is meant to feel disgusted and not in a comfortable place. I‘m so glad you got that. @Redwritinghood @Redheadrambles 6y

Early days, interesting style but I‘m enjoying this #indiebuddyread

Redwritinghood I‘m really enjoying it too. The voices are each unique and it‘s setting up a good mystery. 6y

Redheadrambles @ClairesReads Hahahaha!! My god they are everywhere. That is an interesting cover version mine is completely different... 6y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles have you got the pigeon one? I‘m on page 10- already encountered first pear 6y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads Yes the body-less pigeon it freaks me out, also Lizzie is freaking me out - I am such a timid true crime reader... 6y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles my previous read is definitely not for you then! 6y

Neale #indiebuddyread BEAUTIFUL! 6y
Redheadrambles Is this another Foilo illustrated edition? 6y
Neale Howdy there Trudie. No, it‘s a one off. I was really lucky, it was at the store where I purchased a nice normal edition and there it was. I simply had to have it so I mortgaged the house and now I live in a cardboard box. Hahaha. ;) Seriously, it‘s so lovely. The first page is gold leaf (not real gold) and it reflects the illustration on the other side. I tried to capture it in the photo. Amazing design. :) Wonder if there will be a Circe edition? 6y
