Love this book. The story is extremely powerful and encourages reflection and empowerment. A good read for young adults to gain a new understanding of cultures around the world
Beautiful story about a young girl in Pakistan who defies sexist rules to continue her education!
Some books shake the fundamentals of what you knew. So it is with this book giving an understanding of the truth about indentured servitude in our country. The slavery before African slavery. In hundreds of thousands of cases their servitude was not voluntary, and in the earliest colonies most didn‘t outlive their indenture. Rape, whipping, suffering and abuse was common. Read to understand the scope of English, Scottish and Irish indenture.
This book was lovely. A hard story to read - Amal's childhood in Pakistan is turned upside down when she mouths back at someone at the market. Her father owes this man a considerable amount of money, and the man takes her as an indentured servant to repay the debt. She finds a found family in the other indentured servants, but that doesn't help the ache from missing her family. Books also become a main theme. Would recommend
This book is a middle grade story, about a girl named Amal who's life drastically changed when she spoke against a powerful local landlord who crushed her dreams in an instant. This book was incredibly beautiful and I loved it more than I expected I would. It's simple and moving at the same time teaching the lessons we often tend to forget, of courage, and determination and resilience. Also the cover art is stunning.
