A favorite author! He blends my two favorite genre—historical fiction and mystery. This one is set in the 1720‘s as the South Sea Company collapses. William Spandrel, an innocent London mapmaker, becomes a pawn of the rich and powerful who are trying to protect themselves from scandal. While I did not think this one of his best works, I enjoyed this adventure story filled with suspense and intrigue.
2nd book read for #AwesomeAugust

Shelfie update! I‘m literally running out of house, so if I want to live here for a bit longer, the books needed a new setup.🤣 I saw the style of flipping one book out, and loved it! The ones flipped out all have special meaning (ie, Sandra Brown: first read, White Hot and current fave, Blind Tiger). Hopefully this adds some space. Also: yes, I‘m a Batman fanatic and l love a cluttered shelf 🤣 The TP roll is because I‘m too cheap for Kleenex 🤣

𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 ventures into historical fiction with 𝐁𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫, proving again that she is a masterful storyteller. It's a dazzling & impeccably constructed adventure full of intrigue, mystery, corruption, bootleggers, surprising twists, & romance. Endearing characters are the soul of a fast-paced & engaging tale set in 1920. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I haven‘t read a Sandra Brown book in what seems like forever but I picked up this book and I‘m so glad I did. I love everything about Thatcher and Laurel‘s story. I loved the sensual love story so much. This also reminded me how much I‘ve loved this author in the past. I‘ll have to make sure I pick up her next effort. #100readchallenge #romantsy #readingchallenge2022

CoverToCoverGirl I really liked this one too! It was a bit unusual from her normal style and because of the time setting. 7mo
KristiAhlers @CoverToCoverGirl I totally agree which is why I think I liked it so much. That time period is one of my favorites as well. 7mo

This was really more between a pick and a so-so, but I‘d be willing to try the second in series. Set in 1590 London, young Dr. Nicholas Shelby blames himself and sinks into despair when he loses someone he loves. He begins to see a pattern on several bodies that are washing up from the Thames and sets out to investigate with the help of new friends who‘ve helped him struggle back from the brink. This book is dark both in its murders and the 🔻

robinb atmosphere of the setting. My chief issue was that at 450 pages it was simply too long. I thought maybe it was just set-up for the rest of the series, but in looking ahead the subsequent books are the same length. There were slow places and no need to spread the story out that long. 🔻 7mo
robinb I was also a little frustrated at some abrupt changes in venue/storyline. And while I didn‘t feel especially enamored with the characters, I feel that they will probably come into their own in future books. 4/5⭐️ #DoubleSpin @TheAromaofBooks 7mo
TheAromaofBooks I have read a few books lately that just felt like they needed one more final edit. A hundred pages - or even fifty - can make a huge difference in how a book reads! 7mo

I can't remember the last time I read one of Sandra Brown's books and I'm not sure why this one called to me, but I'm glad it did! Set in a rural Texas town during the prohibition era, a woman whose suffered recent personal tragedy finds herself at the center of the family moonshine business (and subsequent "war" with local competitors), complicated further by her attraction to the new cowboy in town whose curried favor with the sheriff. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wanted a #thriller with a supernatural element for today‘s prompt so it matched #teamhendrix & I this this one does it nicely. It‘s tagged as both #supernaturalthriller & #historicalthriller on Amazon. I really liked the audiobook when I listened to it a couple of years ago. 😱 Very creepy!

The tone of this book was like reading a very suspenseful Turner Classic Movie, although some parts were fairly graphic. The plot centered around bootlegging in the 1920s and I enjoyed it immensely. The characters were well drawn and I could not stop reading.
This is the third book I've recently read set in the 1920s and the focus has has been very different from the ones based in Harlem and Shanghai than this one with white people in Texas.

The book My husband gave me for my birthday was missing about 50 pages! I discovered this as I flipped from page 183 to page 233. So annoying! 😮 Since I was already “into” it I made a Barnes & Noble run at lunch time yesterday to get another one. #readinglunch #happyreader #amazonreturn #BarnesAndNoble
