I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Reading for escapism this week. If you need me, I'll be on Hydra.

squirrelbrain I have this too, on Kindle. Looking forward to your thoughts. 2y
CarolynM I've got a copy but I haven't got around to it yet. Maybe we can push each other to pick it up soon @squirrelbrain I'm interested to see how close it is to the real Charmain and George. 2y
squirrelbrain Great idea @CarolynM - shall we do a #buddyread? I have a couple of other buddy reads going on at the mo, so anytime to suit you after a few weeks time, if you fancy it. I know nothing of the real-life stories so it will be a learning experience for me. 2y
CarolynM @squirrelbrain Sounds good. Let me know when you're ready 2y
Oryx @CarolynM @squirrelbrain I don't know anything about the real people - but so far I'm loving the sunshine and atmosphere. 2y

The Greek Islands | Lawrence Durrell

Pickpick

Bit of a weird one this. Subject matter is close to my heart, the writing is lyrical at times & certain passages did transport me there. BUT at times I had to question whether Durrell actually liked the Greek Islands in any way - he wrote so many off as nothing special & was downright rude about some! You'd think he was in mid-century Slough! And at times I actively disliked his privileged white male attitude with its traces of colonialism. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi From above: That said, he certainly knew his history & mythology & could tell an enjoyable personal anecdote. He sets out all places of historical interest & cultural significance and recommends beaches and walks as well as describing the landscape & personality of the different islands. I suspect they've all changed significantly since this was written (1978). 3y

Desperately missing and longing for my beloved Greek Islands right now - especially my 2nd home, Kos. So just had to treat myself to this gorgeous volume to help ease the pain.

Next bedtime read!

CarolynM I have this on my shelf but haven't got around to it yet. How are you finding it? 3y
Verity @CarolynM mmmm. Haven‘t got that far yet - hardbacks always take me longer because they‘re so unwieldy! 3y
