Audiobook pick:
This was a recollection of the horrific abuse suffered at the hands of his mother. It was so unbelievable and devastating to hear what he endured. What a survivor.

There‘s a surprising calm that comes from reading this book. It comes in between the rushes to survive. It‘s among the hope that there are still good people out there. The calm comes from Sal having faced it all, knowing she can make it through anything - and from Peppa laughing along the entire way. You can have that seriousness of survival alongside the levity of being along for the ride, laughing - both allowing for and feeding the other.

This story broke my heart time and time again. I can‘t imagine anyone treating an innocent child with such disrespect. How anyone could continue to beat a toddler and do this daily for many, many years, is beyond my understanding. I found it of interest that there was a society to prevent cruelty to animals before there was one for children. I would rated it a 4/5. I learned a considerable amount about a part of history I had‘nt heard of before.

The book discusses Pelzer's struggling with his ability to fit in and adapt to the new environment around him as he is put into foster care. It also talks about the kindness of his foster parents and other people around him as well as his inability to brush his mother aside.

A well written story that I found inspiring. Both characters are either hearing impaired or deaf. The trauma and tragedy they both endured was heart-rending. In the author notes I learned that she is also hearing impaired and that explained how she was able to write such beautiful and real to life characters. There are triggers in this book, so be aware if you are sensitive to such things. 4.5 ⭐️#LitsyLove #LitsyLoveReads @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

I greatly enjoyed this book. Some of this information was absolutely revolutionary to me. Some of it I already knew, but he took those a step or more - further than I dared take them previously - to their logical end. There is nothing shocking about this book, honestly.

GingerAntics If one has thought critically about all the stories one has been told as a child and compared them with the actions of the story tellers, this falls right in line with what you already know, but adds more to broaden that understanding. I can definitely see this as a conversation starter for the open minded, and would gladly read it again with a good group. 3mo

Winter 1970, Daly City, California—I‘m alone. I‘m hungry and I‘m shivering in the dark. I sit on top of my hands at the bottom of the stairs in the garage. My head is tilted backward.
