Mehso-so

I‘m so sorry Bruce. I love your work. Even with this play in prose it‘s hard to finish. This is clearly not Bruce‘s fault. I still appreciated his attempt to make this barely intelligible play into something understandable and coherent. I still think Shakespeare either called this one in or discovered whisky during the writing of this play. Bruce did a commendable job with what he had to work with. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics 5 stars for David Bruce. 1 star for Shakespeare‘s source material. Comes out to 2.5 stars (the loss of stars were in no way Bruce‘s fault). #DavidBruce #shakespeareinprose #verse #prose #shakespearereadalong #Shakespeare #TroilusandCressida 5y

Troilus and Cressida | William Shakespeare

This is the first (only?) Shakespeare play I have straight up hated. I didn‘t really like any of the characters or any of the dialogue. It started out a hot mess. It became more of a hot mess with every act. By the end I just kind of wanted all the characters to end up dead. The only good part about the ending was that the play was finally over. Maybe this is one of those plays that is better on stage. It wasn‘t nearly enough of a tragedy for me.

GingerAntics It seemed like insanity. I didn‘t know Shakespeare went through a drinking phase. That‘s really the only thing that explains how horrible this play is in comparison to all of his others. 5y
DGRachel I‘m glad to be able to say I‘ve read it, but I‘m even happier it‘s over. 😂 5y

GingerAntics @DGRachel I completely agree. I can‘t believe I was so excited for this play. I can‘t believe I voted for this madness. Ugh. 5y
DGRachel I thought the same thing. I felt so guilty for voting for it, I had to finish it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 5y
TheBookHippie Finishing it now screaming 5y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie it‘s a painful one, isn‘t it? 5y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I‘m so ashamed I voted for this hot mess 🤷🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ 5y
TheBookHippie @DGRachel same 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie exactly!!! I wonder just how many of us are thinking, hm, why did I vote for this madness? 5y
Gezemice Lol I am just looking back at your review. We both said hot mess. I swear I have not seen it first, lol. 5y
GingerAntics @Gezemice I think that word (phrase?) is just properly descriptive for this play. Quick, easy, covers everything. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y

Stories from Shakespeare | Marchette Chute

Well, it‘s a tragedy. So this isn‘t going to end well.
~~~
I thought that it, somehow, wasn‘t in the tagged book because for whatever reason I thought it was a comedy. I‘m hoping this nice overview helps clear up some things for me.
Graywacke Thinking the story is a tragedy and the play is making/having fun with the tragedy... which makes it what? 5y
GingerAntics @Graywacke well, a Shakespearean comedy isn‘t a comedy in the funny sense, it just means none of the main characters die. So the comedies aren‘t necessarily meant to be funny. Some of them are, but some of them aren‘t. This play feels like an absolute hot mess. 5y
Graywacke @GingerAntics right, to all that. But he mixed stuff up too. Exit chased by bear became pretty gruesome humor. 5y
GingerAntics @Graywacke fair point...this play is still an absolute hot mess. 5y
Really, because I didn‘t know that. Last I heard, he was acting like a love sick teenager and she was ignoring him. Did I miss something?
Don‘t know why, but I find this idea of medicine amusing. It comes into play in so much of our modern language about health and mental health, though.
I don‘t know why this jumped out at me, but it did. Now that I actually know what happened in the first act, on to Act II!!!
I kind of like that Shakespeare even noticed that these social conventions are absolute BS.
This one doesn‘t seem much clearer than the Shakes, but that could be the Benadryl currently in my system.
