Three #NFTechnology books I have read. The tagged book about the fight for our intimate privacy in the world of technology & the other two memoirs/exposes about when rights were violated in the field of technology. All three made me mad & made me think. 😤🤔

Eggs These sound amazing! 2w

I absolutely loved this! It might have upped the plot complexity to have made Mae more conflicted about what was happening, but I feel like her “sheeple”-like quality represents society as a whole. The book is so spot-on with the approach to social media. Especially terrifying is the thought process behind their ever-more controlling surveillance tactics. I can see people today agreeing with them. Highly recommended for dystopian fans!

KathyWheeler Did you see the movie? 3mo
Reggie I laughed when she gets in trouble because the guy was like we‘ve both been to Portugal and you ignored me. lol something like that. It got crazy. 3mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @KathyWheeler No, and now I‘m reluctant to. I enjoyed the book so much and they usually ruin it with the movie! Did you like the movie? 3mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Reggie Yes, their sensitivity was off the charts! What a great life—spending every minute trying to acknowledge every stranger on the internet who shows you the slightest bit of attention. I thought the book was an amazing commentary on our society! 3mo
KathyWheeler @CindyMyLifeIsLit I didn‘t particularly care for the movie; to me it was completely forgettable. Which was a shame because I really liked the book. 3mo

A stylish, dystopic sci fi detective noir about privacy, freedom, isolation and connection, looking back at our current technological age and forward to possible dramatic difference with an equally jaundiced eye. More questions raised than points made. As much sex/nudity/violence as I've come to expect from Vaughan after Saga.

This was such a good read. A lot of it was quite nostalgic for me. Feel bad for the poor guy. He's really brave.

Pretty scary at how spot on Eggers was with the direction in which social media is going. There were some eye-rolling moments which weakened the book‘s effect on me, so it‘s just a soft pick. My last completion in a somewhat dismal reading year. 😞

BkClubCare The movie freaked me out. Especially since I had just started an HR job 😳 4mo
Readerann @BkClubCare Yeah, I think I‘ll be giving the movie a miss. I feel “unsettled” enough from the book. 😳 4mo

This was cool! A near future America where the fourth estate takes control after the digital Cloud bursts and the Internet is dismantled. A P.I. gets pulled into a conspiracy when his client is killed. A classic trope, but expertly translated into a unique setting. Maybe my last completed read of 2024?

vivastory One of the local major hospitals was a victim of a ransomware attack right before the holidays. It was so severe that they were redirecting ER patients to other hospitals & they still don't even have full access to their medical records. I think about this Vaughan story a lot.

ShyBookOwl Vaughan is my absolute favourite graphic novelist! I need to check this one out! 4mo
TieDyeDude @vivastory I mean, there's evil, then there's holding a hospital hostage. This comic actually had me thinking a bit about growing up without the Internet, then growing up later with it, and the pros and cons. 4mo
TieDyeDude @ShyBookOwl @RaeLovesToRead Vaughn is great. I actually picked this because I loved the artist work on another thing I recently read. Interestingly, I didn't notice the art as much in this as I was sucked in my the story 4mo

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

We meet Mae on her first day in her new job at the Circle. We sit with her on training sessions, as her desk acquires more screens, as her responsibilities increase.

We watch as Mae integrates with her new company culture, we watch as her new job becomes a lifestyle and the destruction that causes her, her family and the world.

This is a compelling read but it's also horrifying and uncomfortable.

Sharpeipup Yes and way better than the movie despite Tom Hanks & Emma Watson‘s efforts. 9mo
Michellesibs @Sharpeipup I didn't realise there was a movie, thank you! 9mo
