Station Eleven: A novel | Emily St. John Mandel

Quote from the author. This was my favorite book of 2018, and possibly of all time - deciding from all the books though!

“If you write literary fiction that‘s set partly in the future, you‘re apparently a sci-fi writer...I think of it as being more of a story about what remains after we lose everything and the importance of art in our lives.”

LiterRohde Late entry. Parent teacher conferences. I picked this for today because of its connection to the arts, which in my mind would include radio. They can add life and spirit to our existence, whether that be post-apocalyptic or otherwise! (edited) 5y
Cinfhen LOVED this book!!! In my all time favorites too!!! Don‘t miss parent/teacher conferences 😂😂I ALWAYS knew how they were going to go #MothersIntuition 5y

Clare-Dragonfly I hate when people say stuff like this. As though science fiction can‘t be about “what happens when people lose everything” and is somehow lesser due to a descriptive genre label. 🙄 5y
LiterRohde @Cinfhen Unfortunately, I had to be there, intuition or no, I‘m the teacher. I always get the parents of students who are doing well. Never the parents of the students who are failing or causing problems. It‘s been that way for 20 years. So, is that intuition, or just the cold, hard facts? 🤪 And now I‘m up bright (no, actually it‘s still dark here) and early to do it all over again today! 🥳 (edited) 5y
Cinfhen What grade(s) do u teach? What subject?? I have 3 kids. Kid 1 & 3 were excellent students so those meetings were always pleasant but middle child while a GREAT KID did not make a GREAT student. You could see the frustration that the teachers felt, some justified some not so much😂😂 Child 1 &2 are only 2 years apart so in HS there were lots of familiar teachers who couldn‘t get how these two students were siblings!!!! 5y
LiterRohde @Cinfhen I‘m a 9th grade Title I reading teacher. My students have gaps in their reading comprehension and are therefore struggling in school. We work to close those gaps. So, when I say doing well, I mean that they are coming to my class and working hard to gain the skills they don‘t have. Most of my kids are failing, so that can‘t be my benchmark for success. But I would love to see one or two parents of kids who don‘t care/cause problems. 5y
Cinfhen I respect that! I agree parent involvement is imperative to a child‘s success!!! Especially for those that are struggling. Props to you for giving these kids the skills they need to communicate and function. #TeachersDontNeedRedCapesToBeAHero 5y
