Kalona's Fall: A House of Night Novella | P. C. Cast, Kristin Cast
post image

Instead, catching a glimpse of himself in the still waters of the lazy creek, he saw that the moonlight color of his wings had changed to the black of the Darkness he had allowed entrance into Nyx‘s Otherworld.
Filled with insatiable rage, Kalona roared his anger to the night‘s sky and lost himself completely.

Bittersweet coming-of-age story about #twins growing up on an island in the Chesapeake Bay. Picture is of a different bay in Maryland but gives a good idea of the landscape. #newyearnewbooks

Ruled by anger and jealousy of his brother, and consumed by his love for his Goddess, Kalona seeks the power to prove his worth, and to claim once and for all that Nyx eternally belongs to him.

#HumbleHarvest Day 17: Not really #Corn but Uni #Corn. Things were going just fine and dandy for Goat until Unicorn moved in. Goat thought he was pretty special with his bicycle, nearly-perfect marshmallow squares, his signature dance moves. Then Unicorn with his shimmering flight, his storm of cupcakes, and professional prancing moves continually steal Goat‘s spotlight, albeit without really intending to. Only a third of the way through this book and pretty sure I've got it all figured out. And if I do, I'm thoroughly disturbed and disgusted... I've got this on sale from Audible and there's still 8 hours left but I'm in chapter 33 and I think there must be a twist I'm missing where this whole thing was a set up for revenge or at least that's what I'm praying for.. that's the only thing I can stomach at this point.

BookLineNSinker So far, this book has me feeling extremely queasy and unsettled... I don't know what going to happen yet but it cannot be good. I guess the author was going hard for the shock factor and that was achieved... I'm not sure if I'm going to continue reading yet... It might be a bail on principle alone. 6mo

Mehso-so

When I was in college, my 20-year-old cousin was murdered by two friends who blamed her for her ex-boyfriend's suicide. The trial was bizarre, but the thing that struck me the most was how committed the murderers had to be to end my cousin's life, and how young they all were (my age and younger). This book brought back a lot of those memories, and maybe gave me a better sense of how passions can carry us away, especially when we're young.

ImperfectCJ That said, I gave it a so-so rating because I found it somewhat plodding and cliched in places, and the ending was unsatisfying. (I just read back over that sentence and thought that's how someone might describe a lot of lives. Something to strive against, I suppose.) Also, the cover doesn't seem like it fits the story at all. 6mo
BarbaraBB What a sad story about your cousin 💔 I agree about the cover. This was a pick for me but more that that it convinced me to read more by O‘Nan and I am so glad I discovered his backlist! 6mo
Anna40 I‘m very sorry about the murder of your cousin. 6mo

ImperfectCJ @BarbaraBB I hadn't heard of Stewart O'Nan before this book, but I agree, while this one didn't quite hit for me, there are qualities in his writing that intrigue me, and I would be interested in reading more of his novels. Is there one of his that you'd particularly recommend? 6mo
ImperfectCJ @Anna40 @TheLudicReader I appreciate your words. It happened 27 years ago, long enough that it feels more like a strange story most of the time, like what happened to my cousin is separate from my feeling of missing her. And because I was away at college, I was more separate from the situation at the time than my younger siblings were. It hit all of us hard, but it was much more stressful/intense for them. 6mo
BarbaraBB This one is very good: 6mo
BarbaraBB And I liked this one even better though it‘s very scary 6mo

#Pop23 ~a book you read more than 10 years ago. I read this in 6th grade, living in Massachusetts at the time. Revisiting it in my adulthood as a Maryland resident, the eastern shore life is much more prominent. It made me sad as these islands are sinking and becoming inhabitable but it was fun to revisit this coming of age story.

Amiable Oh, I adored this book when I was a kid! 6mo
