James A. Michener, a Biography | John Phillip Hayes

Yesterday, I visited the Michener Art Museum, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. There is a small room dedicated to the author. I loved his personal set of Balzac books that were a childhood gift from his aunt. They also had the log from the local library with the date and his signature when he signed for his original library card as a child. He was a Quaker and donated much of his earnings to libraries, schools, and programs for writers.

Kaylamburson So cool! I live only about 25 minutes from Doylestown so I‘ll have to go! 1y
MicheleinPhilly @Kaylamburson Do you??? Why did I think you lived in NY? 🤔 1y

Kaylamburson Do you live near there or were just visiting? @DivineDiana 1y
DivineDiana @Leftcoastzen I had visited the museum many times for various exhibits. This time I remembered that there was a connection to the author! About time! 1y
quirkyreader Yea, a museum dedicated to one of my favourite authors and fellow Quaker. 1y
DivineDiana @quirkyreader I am embarrassed to say that I have not read any of his books. I did start Texas, many, many years ago. It is still on my shelves unfinished! I think 2023 is the year to finally finish it! 🙂 1y
DivineDiana @Kaylamburson I live about 40 minutes away. 1y
Kaylamburson Not bad at all! @DivineDiana ! 1y
quirkyreader @DivineDiana Try Hawai‘i or Tales of The South Pacific and go from there. 1y

This book was really interesting. Unlike many of Michener's books which span centuries, this one took place entirely in 1946. I learned a lot about the geography and culture of Afghanistan at this time.

Had to return it to library owing to exams...

More Michener! This is an interesting story set in #Afghanistan after WWII. Nonetheless he also managed to weave in several elements of the country‘s history. #Augustisatrip

This enchanting song from the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald has nothing to do with the book except for a similar title, but I include it for your listening pleasure. https://youtu.be/5O_ICpYMUds

Thank you so much @Judybskt !!! I tried to get a clearer picture, but my boys kept reaching for the treats 😁 I love this little slice of Pennsylvania. I have only seen the name James Michener on book spines at the library, he sounds like he's led an interesting life and I look forward to reading about it! The treats are perfect (we've already opened the pop bottles) and the bookmarks are gorgeous! THANK YOU again!

The lure of a well told story about far off places, especially when filled with danger, mystery, & romance, is hard to resist. Michener easily transports the reader to Afghanistan just after WWII in telling the story of an American military man charged with discovering what happened to a young American woman who has gone missing. I enjoyed the book, appreciate the research that went into it (like all his books) & now really want to travel!✈️🌎✈️
