What I Leave Behind | Alison McGhee

Oh my gosh! I read reviews about this book a few times so it‘s been on my radar awhile. I‘m SO GLAD I finally got to it!

The image (pg. 198) is Mandarin for 100.

Will is grieving his father; his best friend was raped at a party shortly after he left.

He walks. He leaves gifts for those he meets.

100 chapters; 100 words/chapter

Beautiful

Free Lunch | Rex Ogle

Heartbreaking and real. This is Rex‘s memoir of his 6th grade year. Excited for the new experiences junior high will be, Rex is deflated when he learns his mom has signed him up for the free lunch program.
In addition to living below the poverty line, Rex also suffers physical and verbal abuse at home.
Told through his 6th grade POV, I believe many students I serve will relate to Rex on some level.

I did hope for more of Levi‘s character ... then this morning it clicked! I already know Levi 🤦🏻‍♀️

Oh. My. Goodness! This book was marvelous!
I got to a point in the story Friday night that kept me up until 3:10 Saturday morning to finish this book.

Sunny is such a lovable character — she is written very real.

This book needs to be in every elementary school.

This gets every star available!
I‘m gushing right now and can‘t get the thoughts sorted for a proper review. I‘m just really, really, really happy I read this.

Perfect read for Pride Month — Zenobia is a trans girl who is living with her lesbian aunts; she makes a new friend who is gender fluid; Uncle Sprink is a drag queen and it works so well.

Oh my gosh! I laughed, I cried, and I hugged this book! I love that this wasn‘t about a romantic relationship. I did figure out some things early, but it didn‘t spoil the story for me at all.

Garvey's Choice | Nikki Grimes

Short, but big on showing your true self.

Garvey loves books and chess. Dad wants him to be a jock. Garvey feels unseen by Dad and turns to food. Teased at school, his best friend encourages him to join chorus. Here, a new friend gives Garvey bits of wisdom to help him silence the unkind words and focus on finding himself and sharing his true self with the world.

Told through Tanka poems
