I live here, so why you following me?
Mr. Master Race, but still no GED
...
Fear in your flesh, you so scared to be replaced
Think you a future billionaire, but your future's being erased

This takes a different perspective now that the war in Gaza appears to have come to an end. When I started it the war was still raging. And the ants-Israel pro-Hamas movement was in full swing as well. This book was a reminder of the horrors of October 7th and why we should support the only country in the Middle East that support western values.

But love, in its mystery, has its own power. It alone gives us meaning that endures. It alone allows us to embrace and cherish life. Love has power both to resist in our nature what we know we much resist, and to affirm what we know we must affirm. And love, as the poets remind us, is eternal.

To survive as a human being is possible only through love. And, when Thanatos is ascendant, the instinct must be to reach out to those we love, to see in them all the diversity, pity, and pathos of the human. And to recognise love in the lives of others—even those with whom we are in conflict—love that is like our own.

This book was given to me by someone very dear. He wrote this inscription on the title page:

“I had the chance to read this when God‘s Chosen People were trying to fulfil their messianic delusions. It is relevant now more than ever. May you continue to find a life of love and meaning.”

I am so grateful this book fell into my hands when it did. Chris Hedges is a striking writer, and a perspective well worth listening to.

Had to speed up Doug‘s narration to make it sound more normal lol. A harrowing read, but a very important one. Murray‘s insights into how modern events highlight the disturbing trends in western thought are enough to give you nightmares. Listen/read with care.

This book is a powerful & compelling look at the merging of politics, religion, & big money—we‘re talking BIG money (coming from a handful of very rich people)—in building a decidedly undemocratic, illiberal movement that seeks to redefine what the US is, identify exactly who is an American, & to shape the country‘s future by dragging us into the past. I can‘t even imagine what it was like for the author to immerse herself in this world. Scary.

It‘s refreshing to meet a writer who clearly understands the core issues dividing this country. Unfortunately, this book offers a bleak assessment of our future, suggesting that our nation is on its last legs.
The author not only diagnoses the problems but also explores solutions most Americans overwhelmingly support. Yet, these efforts are being blocked by those who act as parasites, standing in the way of progress and meaningful change.
