Double Cup Love
Double Cup Love: On the Trail of Family, Food, and Broken Hearts in China | Eddie Huang
8 posts | 11 read | 20 to read
In the follow-up to his bestselling coming-of-age memoir Fresh Off the Boat, now a hit show on ABC, celebrity chef Eddie Huang tells a powerful story about love and family and what really makes us who we are. After growing up in a wild first-generation immigrant family in the comically hostile world of suburban America, Huang begins to wonder just how authentic his Chinese identity really is. So he enlists his brothers Emery and Evan and returns to the country his ancestors abandoned. His immediate goal is to sample Chinas best food and see if his cooking measures up to local tastesbut his deeper goals are to reconnect with his homeland, repair his frayed family relationships, decide whether to marry his all-American (well, all-Italian-American) girlfriend, and figure out just where to find meaning in his life.

Listening to this books made me crave so many things but I settled on this great Pho place in Michigan with Bao and spring rolls 🤤
I liked this book more than his first one and while crass at times this book is a great mix of identity, food and culture.

quirkyreader Which part of the state was it in. I have been looking for a new pho place. 6y
DogEaredBooks @quirkyreader it's in Kalamazoo (southwestern Michigan). It's called Pho on the Block 6y

Listening to this book makes me feel uncool (but I've mostly embraced my squareness) and unsmart (the author speaks pretty intelligently about food and culture). It's jarring after only knowing the author from the Fresh Off The Boat sitcom. I find myself spacing out frequently, but I don't care enough to rewind. I'm still interested in listening to the prequel, though

Wish I had the patience for this one. Maybe I'm too old... The writing style does not appeal. And the #epigraphs come from rappers. #NotTheTargetAudience

Godmotherx5 @BookishMarginalia I saw him in an interview. You confirmed my fear. I wasn't sure about the book. I don't think in the target audience either. Better to admit it than to live in denial. 8y
BookishMarginalia @Godmotherx5 Indeed! I'm sure many other readers will love it, but it's just not for me. That happened to me with The Girls. Most people seem to love it, but the style and the main character who didn't mature drove me crazy. 8y
Godmotherx5 @BookishMarginalia I hear you. I felt the same way about The Girls, too. Sometimes I think I'm becoming a cranky old woman. 8y

Finished the book today & then went to hear him speak. Don't let this "bad boy" fool you. He had the crowd laughing but he's thoughtful & has a lot to say abt race, culture, identity & of course, food. One of my favorite food memoirs.

Switching between the audiobook (when I need my hands free) and the Kindle (when I get to sit).

The world is a sad sad place today and I need an escape. ❤️💛💚💙💜

I loved his last book Fresh Off the Boat. Just started his new one (ARC from NetGalley). Can't wait to see the man himself!

#NowReading. Eddie Huang's Fresh Off the Boat is a favorite and I love the TV show. I'm very excited to be reading his next book, releasing May 31. It is so good.

Kenny The picture has nothing to do with anything, but I still feel like it fits. 8y
