The Liars' Gospel
The Liars' Gospel: A Novel | Naomi Alderman
9 posts | 5 read | 16 to read
An award-winning writer re-imagines the life of Jesus, from the points of view of four people closest to him before his death. This is the story of Yehoshuah, who wandered Roman-occupied Judea giving sermons and healing the sick. Now, a year after his death, four people tell their stories. His mother grieves, his friend Iehuda loses his faith, the High Priest of the Temple tries to keep the peace, and a rebel named Bar-Avo strives to bring that peace tumbling down. It was a time of political power-play and brutal tyranny. Men and women took to the streets to protest. Dictators put them down with iron force. In the midst of it all, one inconsequential preacher died. And either something miraculous happened, or someone lied. Viscerally powerful in its depictions of the period - massacres and riots, animal sacrifice and human betrayal - The Liars' Gospel makes the oldest story entirely new.

Stories of Yehoshuah/Jesus from Miryam/Mary, Iehouda/Judas, Caiaphas, and Bar-Avo/Barrabas.

The stories are firmly rooted in the Jewish context of a land occupied by the Romans but show a figure different but recognisably extrapolated from the stories in the New Testament. Fascinating.

Primarily known for her most recent book The Power, I have heard that Alderman's older works such as Disobedience & The Liar's Gospel are far better. A year after the death of #Marysboychild four people tell their stories, providing a portrait of the contradictory figure known as Yehoshuah & their tumultuous times.

BarbaraBB You are right, I think. Disobedience is much better than The Power! 5y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I have yet to read her, but I have both Power & Disobedience on my shelves. I think I'll read Disobedience after I finish the Morrison! 5y
BarbaraBB @vivastory Alderman may have a hard time competing with Morrison 😉 5y

andrew61 Really interested as I've been listening to lots of positive reviews for the film of disobedience and the author was on the radio 4 book programme. Id forgotten that she had written the power but will hopefully see both the film now and try the book. 5y
readordierachel Interesting to see the different cover designs. I particularly like the one on the left. 5y

I've always had a strange fascination for "retellings" of the story of Jesus and this one is no exception. In Alderman's tale Jesus (Yehoshuah) appears little and, fittingly, what we learn of him is told by others; his mother, Judas (Iehuda), the High Priest of Jerusalem and Bar-Avo (Barabbas). It's a rich, moving and thoughtful story that tackles faith, love, pride and the sheer transformative power of stories

vivastory Terrific review, as always. Sounds fantastic! 6y
Moray_Reads @vivastory it was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the sections of Mary and Barabbas, intelligent and thought-provoking 6y
vivastory I have been meaning to read Alderman for awhile. It's interesting because it seems like her older work is more loved than The Power. 6y
Moray_Reads @vivastory I really enjoyed this one but I've started The Power three times and only managed a few pages so far 6y
