This is an excerpt from "Racial Dualism at Century's End" by Howard Winant. It's in this book that I've been gradually reading through, but this essay is so ? and relevant to today that I highly recommend finding it if you can. It deconstructs colorblindness in our society after the Civil Rights Act.

The whole....textbooks are primarily made and content decided on by the school board in Texas (because they order the most and can therefore influence content) is very scary, especially when that school board makes partisan and religious decisions not based on educational facts. 7y

I work in a library in a small town in Ohio, and only recently discovered that every one of my co-workers is voting for he who must not be named. I'm absolutely stunned. Then there are the patrons who check out the HRC bashing books, and think that I want to hear how she belongs in jail, and wait for me to agree with them. I feel like asking them aren't they ashamed of themselves??!! 😔 7y

White butthurt and people supporting that clown for other reasons. I find the reasons people support him here in the city are different than the ones if I were to drive to a small town rural area. 7y

moranadatter I'm in one of the few liberal strongholds in WI. For local elections, I've had to choose between a Democrat and a Green. Still, if I recall correctly, the incarceration rate for black men in this county was 21 times the incarceration rate of white men as recently as 3 years ago. Having Democrats in power did very little to change that. It's a bit better now that we have a black DA who gets it and gives a shit, but ... 7y

moranadatter ... the kind of systemic change we need isn't coming from the Democratic Party. There are still career politicians at the top who benefit from the way things are & they're perfectly content to pay lip service to social justice during election season while continuing with business as usual afterward, knowing that it's enough to appear better than the other party's candidate come the next election. I'm so sick of this! There has to be a better way. 7y

BookishFeminist @kmdartist Racism definitely has no political party. Our local third party candidates are always BS but I can see how they could make a difference (hopefully) somewhere else. Wisconsin's mass incarceration rates are HORRIBLE. It's heartbreaking. You're lucky to live in a liberal stronghold in WI. I lived in a liberal stronghold in MN but the burbs were different. Also MN liberalism is often Not My Liberalism bc a lot still has racist undertones. 7y

BookishFeminist @kmdartist But yes I agree- a lot of what this article argues is that both Democrats & Republicans create this colorblind farce to benefit white supremacy and it justifies still marginalizing other racial backgrounds. There is definitely a better way! It's just a shame so many politicians don't think outside "traditional" values, regardless of what side of the aisle you're on. I see more progressivism from dems but they are sometimes worse. 7y

moranadatter @BookishFeminist Yeah, I remember MN. I grew up there and learned a lot of awful, wrong things about race that I had to unlearn in college and grad school. The Liberalism here isn't much better. It's more of the recent trend towards violent activism or the version of liberalism with racist undertones you described. I believe in nonviolent resistance, education and organization as vehicles for bringing about social change. 7y

Tcip @BookishFeminist I think i agree with that. I like my job because I try to take my values into my workplace and use what I think is right and apply it. Once I am done with my masters I want to do it on a more impactful basis. 7y

BLM and Native demonstrations we have today are the direct descendants of race riots and protests since the 1600s, but to the news it's "unexpected and sudden." No, it's unexpected that you (white people) have to pay attention, and maybe that you don't have as much influence as you thought. 7y

I grew up in a suburb of DC & went to college in NJ, & while race problems exist there & everywhere I was astounded by the near constant, heartbreaking racism & sexism I saw on a daily basis in MN. I have never lived somewhere so blatantly but ignorantly racist, esp among folks who like to consider themselves open-minded. I couldn't stand it in law school. (Not everyone was like this but it was astounding how many there were.) 7y

becausetrains @kmdartist upper Midwest liberalism is sort of the epitome of "all lives matter, so we want to whitesplain why you blacks [Mexicans, Hmongs, etc.] should stop killing each other." I never knew a Black person until I went to college, and then only a few acquaintances - easy to ignore racial issues when there literally are almost no visible non-whites out of the cities, the farms, or the Rez. 7y

BookishFeminist @kmdartist Ignorance is definitely curable & systems changed. I still grapple with what too, but how to get there, I don't think it can happen without a lot of open dialogue. I am a proponent of discussing uncomfortable issues with people of different backgrounds. I think we tend to default to discussing societal changes amongst those of similar backgrounds to us bc we're afraid of offending, & that doesn't generate change IMO. 7y

It is so frustrating to see politicians (on both sides, @kmdartist, I agree!) seem to use someone who feels entitled to something better as a whip against those even more marginalized - all for a lack of perspective. It always feels so much more personal, even, than oldwhitemen telling us about our bodies or lives (we know about those, and maybe can combat it). But racist rhetoric on who to blame when we fail? I always have because I see the lack of honest information provided to children and I see adults who have never tried to learn about their history. It's disturbing. Not to mention incarceration rates, police brutality, nationalist movements and how social media propogates hate. Society can change but only if people want it too. Too many dont see racism... 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @becausetrains It would definitely help if we actually taught a more balanced view of history, and more up to the current time period, but yes I know what you mean....it needs to spread into the other areas of education too, diverse books for English classes, and definitely some more extended civics classes. I had one HS civics class, but I think I remember more about the division of labor and checks and balances then some people in politics.... 7y

Tcip @kmdartist personal reflection is something we can all use regardless of political affiliation. The liberalistic view is that they (and by that I put myself in that group) are already self enlightened and others are not and it's simply not true. When we come down to it our own national identity is tied so tightly to race and nationalism that we all need to reflect on how we see the world around us. Not just those on one side or another. 7y

moranadatter harassed for pointing out that we have work to do too. I keep going back to Mary Wollstonecraft's point about men's complaints about women being a result of the education they're allowed. Well, it's an exercise in madness to expect people who were taught racist things as children to be magically not racist as adults. It takes work to unlearn that 💩 & we should be helping not accusing. And we should be working on changing education for kids today. 7y

Tcip @TheNextBook @kmdartist there are a lot of things we can point at as the problem with the other guy and his voters but really it means a failure to connect with people who think differently, at least that's how I look at it or try to. I work in law enforcement so I listen to a lot of Trump supporters who are voting for him for many different reasons so I have a great deal of time to think inward about my reasons as an American voter. 7y

I had to unlearn wrong ideas about how the world worked, America's place in the world, the fairness of the justice system, & the neutrality of language & academic texts. It's subtle, but those beliefs lead to wrong and harmful conclusions; people who are taught wrong things believe they are being fair because they would be if what they were taught were true. 7y

Tcip Empathy can be taught but I think that the first time I ever really understood cultural empathy was when I watched the movie Paradise Now in my Palestinian cultures class. It blew my mind to the point that it made me think differently about the world around me and how I thought about the idea of "sides" in a conflict. @BookishFeminist 7y

moranadatter @becausetrains I did think & say a lot of harmful things. It's just that those things weren't part of the foundation of my worldview & disappeared when the ideas supporting them did. The most harmful thing I was taught was that racism & sexism were in the past. I learned that wasn't true in horrible ways, but those experiences played a big part in starting to unravel the rest of the lies & partial truths. I suspect I haven't found them all yet. 7y

Tcip I cannot wait to live in a world where my daughters can look at an example like her. My oldest the other day who is 4 asked me who she was because she was on tv and I told her in a super general way about the American democratic system and she said, "I can be President if I want to be?" I haven't always agreed with everything they have done, but I have always respected her because she learns, from past mistakes from others around her, and she is a great leader. I would be proud to call her President & hope your daughters can too. These things matter, just like representation does in books & movies. 8y

I got my degree in humanities but a great portion of my program was dedicated to understanding culture through representations I.e film and women in media, counter cultures. Books and representations of Palestinian culture, Mexican culture, 60's and 80's film and cultural meaning. Junk like that. But honestly French lit and Poli sci sounds dope as hell :) 8y

Sounds like we took a lot of similar ones- I focused on francophone lit so a lot of stuff about imperialism/colonialism, feminism, other cultures etc & I focused my poli sci courses around international and political movement politics as well, so I had a lot of fun. 😀 we probably wound up with really similar stuff with different names! 8y

BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords Sadly it isn't sometimes, and he shouldn't even have to take those precautions in a system that should give him due process and benefit of the doubt under law. ? it is so infuriating. Some folks I'm afraid are too caught up in believing black folks, POC, or those that are "different" or "other" than them as inherently unsafe, and it makes me angry bc it couldn't be further from the truth when we endanger their lives. 8y

I feel awful for the folks that have to listen to those microaggressions and feel unsafe because some of the folks you work with are ignorant to how damaging saying those things can be. I've had my fair share of confrontation with ignorant people who don't want to think their comments are backhandedly bigoted, and also plenty of teachable moments myself. 8y

Black lives >>> white feelings. It's such an affront to so many people to ask them to not even change their views but just ask them to *examine* their world view. Very sad & extremely infuriating- I can only imagine the bias you deal with daily. 8y

TheBookbabeblog84 @BookishFeminist it can be hard to shake off; it takes a strong person to realize that it's not about you. Not about your color. It's about fear of the unknown. I think what makes it worse is that there are not enough people firing back about the bias etc. not to mention the rise of a President Candidate that speaks hate from the stump. 😬 8y

It's always existed sadly but it's been feeling a lot more dangerous lately bc people are more afraid to speak out against the bigotry & it feels like hateful people are less held back than before in some circumstances because of he who shall not be named. 😬 I wish it were the reverse. Vinjii Thankfully over here getting shot by the police is very rare. Sadly I have the impression we as a species are getting worse again when it comes to empathy, compassion and tolerance :( and now racist, right wing leaders are emerging everywhere, in Europe, Australia, the US and people who previously at least remained silent are now under the impression they can start being openly racist and intolerant. It's heartbreaking. 8y

BookishFeminist @Vinjii I'm glad it's more rare and I'm afraid that's because of our ridiculous political stance on guns- I see why it's a personal topic for so many people but arming the populace isn't going to eliminate violence. So our police are required essentially to carry guns since we're allowed to. ? it's unnerving when you think of how trigger-happy some folks can be, like the cop who just shot a black man yesterday. She only "thought she saw danger." 8y

BookishFeminist @Vinjii The overtly racist right-wing leaders cropping up everywhere are gut-wrenching to think about. I hear them speak and I get sick to my stomach and as someone with a fair amount of privilege in this country I know I wouldn't lose too much & can't imagine the disgust & fear people with less privilege must feel. Like you said it's very heartbreaking that people feel so threatened to resort to hatred of this level. 😔 8y

BookishFeminist @Vinjii And it sets such a poor example for others like you say- if a politician is saying it and denouncing "political correctness," then why can't I? The rise of these people shows how much fear and hatred have been riding in people's subconsciouses without saying anything. And how many exist that don't say anything- for instance people who denounce Trump publicly in the US but secretly vote for him bc they agree & wont confront their biases. 8y

Vinjii @BookishFeminist Dangerous are the people who so far knew it's not appropriate to be openly racist or openly whatever they'd like to be and they were in the minority and ridiculed whenever they opened their mouths. Now they get told by people who are running for office that actually it's acceptable. The UK is dealing with a rise in hate crime for example. It's scary. 8y

Vinjii @BookishFeminist and yes, same, white and middle class, hence quite some privilege (I say some because woman and gay and a foreigner in the UK) so I don't have to fear anything.... but what if this tip to the right results in a slippery slope and we slide into massive world wide conflict of some sort? 😰 8y

Vinjii @BookishFeminist I've talked to a few people who are nice people, they are generous and caring (or so I thought?) but they're so scared of terrorism that they actually want ridiculous measures implemented to keep themselves and their families safe. And they say things that break my heart simply because the press and politicians are spreading fear and more fear and with fear comes hatred 😰 8y

I agree completely- I think a lot of the right-wing politics are being driven by fear & ignorance rather than flat out hatred, yet it's still based in this concept of "exceptionalism" that they're more entitled to certain things than other people, like safety for instance. The other really damaging thing in my opinion is the misinformation that is spread. 8y

BookishFeminist @Vinjii For instance most terrorism in the US is homegrown yet folks think implementing xenophobic & anti-immigration policies are the answer. It's a problem without an easy answer to be sure, but continually othering people & failure to include them in the discussion perpetuates the problem in my opinion. It leads to resistance and resentment that can build to more widespread conflict like you mention, esp since these are global policies. 8y

Vinjii @BookishFeminist I agree, of course there's no easy answer but fear and hate definitely isn't the right way. I don't think I'm more deserving of safety and shelter than anybody else. I won the birth lottery. I have no right to keep people from coming here that didn't. At least that's how I see it. 8y

BookishFeminist @Vinjii Emphasizing our differences won't get us anywhere- it doesn't mean differences don't exist & aren't valid to remark upon, but to make them the target of exclusionary policies creates tension & drives the focus away from our similarities and leads people back to more hate and entitlement. See: Brexit. 😰 it's all very heartbreaking and scary. We have a rise in certain hate crimes too and it's unnerving to think about. 8y

Vinjii @BookishFeminist A man in my town got beaten up and died by teenagers and it looks like the reason was that he spoke Polish 😰 Investigation is still ongoing so we'll see. But that just shouldn't happen. Plus I keep being called a delusional leftie, which also shouldn't be the case? And Brexit. Sigh. Another step in the wrong direction 😰 8y

I'm inclined to distrust investigations anyway in a heated political climate because they often turn up some interesting "official" reasons when it was a hate crime.
