Pickpick

A short, poignant read on the beauty of banality. Plainsong is one of those books where nothing happens. A Japanese man in his late twenties takes in some old and new acquaintances into his apartment and for the most part they all live in idle tranquility. Hosaka's prose is casual and dreamy in a way unlike any other Japanese author I've read. Terrific and breezy.

Faibka Sounds like something I would like to read and I‘ve never heard of this author before. I spy a lot of Murakami‘s in your picture :) I love his work! (edited) 6y
Faibka And Mishima! Cool collection 6y
matthieumcintosh @Faibka Murakami's the author who got me into J-Lit (pretty much my favorite). Even having read some blurb on Plainsong I was still surprised by what I got! Totally recommend it and really anything else Dalkey Archive puts out. 6y

Faibka @matthieumcintosh great, I‘ll definitely check it out! I see you‘re also reading Ulysses 😃 6y
matthieumcintosh @Faibka Yep, for a class about geography in the Modernist novel. I'm enjoying it alot, not really trying to wring it out. Definitely the most I've ever actively enjoyed language in a novel. Every page just has a, "Wow, that's different!" moment 6y
Faibka @matthieumcintosh yes it does! I love all the clever ways he stretches the possibilities of language and narrative composition and structure, such a great book! Glad you‘re enjoying it, I‘m three chapters away from finishing it and feel both happy and sad. But I know I will definitely reread it. 6y

Mehso-so

A young Japanese guy enjoys gambling with two friends. He enjoys trying to feed and befriend local stray cats. Two down-on-their-luck filmmakers and one of their girlfriends crash at his place for extended periods of time. Nothing seems to bother or affect him very much. A wonderfully written/translated collection of odd, sometimes quietly affecting anecdotes that do not cohere into much of anything. The moments were a bit too small for my liking.

CherylDeFranceschi I agree. So gorgeous. But very slow. 7y
Trav I didn't enjoy this for many reasons, which I will discuss on Goodreads. My rating is 2 stars. Too banal for my liking. 7y
shawnmooney @McFarchie I think you might enjoy this book, because of the high cat content. Please read my review – there's a slightly longer one on Goodreads, linked above. If you're at all interested, I'd love to pop my copy in the mail for you. I don't want to keep it. Let me know if you're interested and then I'll give you my email address so you can send me your snail mail address… :-) 7y

Abailliekaras I'm way behind sorry, I've been unable to find the book! Bookstores and online no luck so far. 😥 I'll post my thoughts as soon as I can. 7y
Sue @shawnmooney @Trav @BookishFeminist @quirkyreader @CherylDeFranceschi @Annl I really enjoyed it! I found the character development to be quite engaging and the structure interesting. I think the title is reflective of the fact that while we all have our unique stories, they are filled with lots of quiet, ordinary moments. While these are also not page turners, they are certainly interesting to those of us who are in them :) 7y
quirkyreader I am still on the lookout for a copy as well. My B-Day is coming up so I might just have to gift myself. 🐸🐙 7y
CherylDeFranceschi My father always called books and movies like this quiet. He meant it with a kind of love. I feel that this book qualifies for this title. Mellifluous and quiet. Plainsong. @Trav @BookishFeminist @quirkyreader @Annl @shawnmooney 7y

Here's @Trav and I at the bookstore Sunday. This Japanese novel jumped out at her; she was drawn to its
minimalist cover design. After briefly reviewing the plot summary, we decided to each get a copy, read it, and discuss it on Litsy in November. We're looking for folks to join us then! It doesn't seem to be available in e-book format anywhere, but paper copies are available from the usual online venues. Comment below if you'd like to join us!

Abailliekaras Why not! 👏🏼📚 8y
BookishFeminist Love this idea! I'll see if I can grab a copy. 8y

shawnmooney @Abailliekaras @BookishFeminist Wonderful! I just saw how paltry the Litsy summary was so I pasted the Goodreads URL in above. 8y
Sue Well look at you two there! I'm in - the book sounds great! 8y
Sue Ok I may need to reign in my enthusiasm until I seen if I can get a copy here! 8y
shawnmooney @sue I don't know where you are, but the book seems to be widely available: http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?ac=sl&st=sl&ref=bf_s2_a1_t1_1&qi=87Tf6Xba4j9Lv... 8y
quirkyreader I like the idea of having a book club like this. It gives everyone a chance to find new writers that are often overlooked. 🐸🐙 8y
Annl I'm in. 8y
Sue @shawnmooney Crisis averted! I'm in! (Managed to pick it up from a Aussie site that wasn't going to cost me the small fortune Amazon would have charged me to get it here.) 8y
Trav Oh my gosh I love this photo! Sorry for the late reply, we just got back from our honeymoon today. I've been trying to catch up on everything! 😱😱 8y
shawnmooney @Abailliekaras @BookishFeminist @Sue @quirkyreader @annl @CherylDeFranceschi @Trav Hey everyone, looking forward to us discussing this 176-page novel next month! Because it's so short, I suggest we not divide it up into sections to discuss week-by-week but talk about it as a whole after everyone's finished reading it, starting, say, on or about November 14. How does that sound? I'm looking forward to your ideas. 7y
Sue That sounds great!! 7y
Abailliekaras Perfect! 7y
Trav I am happy with that! 7y
