Gardens in the Dunes
Gardens in the Dunes: A Novel | Leslie Marmon Silko
5 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
A sweeping, multifaceted tale of a young Native American pulled between the cherished traditions of a heritage on the brink of extinction and an encroaching white culture, Gardens in the Dunes is the powerful story of one womans quest to reconcile two worlds that are diametrically opposed. At the center of this struggle is Indigo, who is ripped from her tribe, the Sand Lizard people, by white soldiers who destroy her home and family. Placed in a government school to learn the ways of a white child, Indigo is rescued by the kind-hearted Hattie and her worldly husband, Edward, who undertake to transform this complex, spirited girl into a proper young lady. Bit by bit, and through a wondrous journey that spans the European continent, traipses through the jungles of Brazil, and returns to the rich desert of Southwest America, Indigo bridges the gap between the two forces in her life and teaches her adoptive parents as much as, if not more than, she learns from them.

This is my last day in Tombstone, Arizona so I decided to spend some time in the pool and then reading poolside at the guest ranch where my BFF and I have been staying for the weekend. It's been a great trip and I've had time before and after all the touristy things to get halfway through this book.

JamieArc Perfect author to read during your time in AZ! 10mo

Pickpick

I finally finished this book yesterday and I‘m still not sure what to think. I had read Ceremony by Silko, and was hoping this book would be just as great but easier to read. Thankfully that is the case! Silko weaves together multiple intriguing stories as she tells the tale of two Native American sisters on their journeys back to each other. So many cultures, mindsets, and histories are included to complete the story and Silko‘s genius

Taking comfort in books. After seeing posts by @BookishFeminist @lemonlime799 I pulled out books by Americans (or US residents) who are POC and/or immigrants. By preference, most are women.

I'm not American but I live in America. The city I live in is a majority-minority city with just over half the population being Asian. Not being a citizen I don't like to talk politics about a country that isn't really mine but I'm so #overthis #overit

queerbookreader Right onnnn. I'm of the opinion that if you live here, you're American, citizen or not. Am also of the opinion that if you have to pay taxes, you have the right to talk about this country's politics as much as you want lmao 7y
queerbookreader Thank you for the list!! I have been wanting to read Akata Witch for so long omg but I haven't found it at the library yet. If you also feel up to it, a list of books about/by Asian Americans would be totally cool to see too! 7y
DreesReads I have read 5 of these and given up on one--but what's the dark spine on the right? I can't read it! 7y

BookishFeminist Ditto @lemonlime799. You're American. You live here. You matter, as does your voice. You can't vote but damnit that's why I voted the way I did, to protect voting rights and the voices of millions like you who can't officially vote. You and your family is affected by this decision and I am so sorry. We're gonna fight tooth and nail raising hell. 💪🏼 Thank you so much for these recs. Adding them to the #overit list. 7y

RealLifeReading @lemonlime799 thanks for that! 😀And yes an Asian American list is definitely something I want to put up too. In the meantime I wrote this list of books by Asian writers earlier in the year https://reallifereading.com/2016/05/31/100-books-by-asian-writers-you-should-rea... 7y

BookishFeminist If you publish an Asian American list, both natural born citizens and immigrant voices, please let me know. I would love to put an Asian American section in this #overit syllabus. 😂 it's grown from a list to a syllabus but I think that's amazing. 7y
BookNAround I haven't necessarily kept up on the literature, but my focus in grad school was Asian American lit. There's so much more available now than there was back then (a major reason I didn't manage to keep up). 7y
