Guardian and a Thief
Guardian and a Thief | Megha Majumdar
5 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
FINALIST FOR THE KIRKUS PRIZE - Megha Majumdar's electrifying new novel, following her acclaimed New York Times bestseller A Burning--longlisted for the National Book Award--is set in a near-future Kolkata, India, ravaged by climate change and food scarcity, in which two families seeking to protect their children must battle each other. A piercing and propulsive tour de force. In a near-future Kolkata beset by flooding and famine, Ma, her two-year-old daughter, and her elderly father are just days from leaving the collapsing city behind to join Ma's husband in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After procuring long-awaited visas from the consulate, they pack their bags for the flight to America. But in the morning they awaken to discover that Ma's purse, containing their treasured immigration documents, has been stolen. Set over the course of one week, A Guardian and a Thief tells two stories: the story of Ma's frantic search for the thief while keeping hunger at bay during a worsening food shortage; and the story of Boomba, the thief, whose desperation to care for his family drives him to commit a series of escalating crimes whose consequences he cannot fathom. With stunning control and command, Megha Majumdar paints a kaleidoscopic portrait of two families, each operating from a place of ferocious love and undefeated hope, each discovering how far they will go to secure their children's future as they stave off encroaching catastrophe. A masterful new work from one of the most exciting voices of her generation.

This author‘s first book didn‘t quite work for me, but her follow up is superb. Following a small family across a week in Kolkata during significant food shortages, it looks at human depth and how we all carry both guardian and thief within ourselves. It is a literary read with the propulsive pacing of a thriller. It would be a very worthy winner of the National Book Award.

rebcamuse I love that you read another book from the author even though the first one didn't do it for you. A lesson for us all! :-) 5d

Hooked_on_books @rebcamuse It‘s a lesson for sure! If it hadn‘t been nominated for this award, I likely would have skipped it, so I‘m glad they got me to go for it anyway. 5d

Majumdar's newest novel was so intense, I had physical reactions while reading it. This story is about love and family, but told in such a way that it raises so many questions within you, one of the main being: Who is more worthy?

Your perception will constantly be shifting while reading this, and you will be forced to ask yourself some questions that might be uncomfortable.

👇🏽

Amor4Libros (Cont‘d) I loved this book. The story takes place in a span of seven days, but as the tension builds each day for Ma and Boomba, at the end you will feel that you've known these characters for years. Almost every page on this book packs a surprise and I was not ready for that ending!

Yikes. This was rough.
For the question: Who is the Guardian?
Yourself
Who is the Thief?
Yourself

It's all by circumstances & circumstances change, given your need.

Are you willing to do what you need to survive?
Are you willing to lie to yourself about that?
It's always about the survival of yourself & those you hold close.
Judge not...Etc etc.

squirrelbrain I thought this was a tough read too. 3w

A difficult to book to read. Set in a very near future Kolkata where the heat and floods have led to poverty, many residents are emigrating to the US on climate visas.

Ma is one of those and, along with her father and 2 year old daughter she has just obtained their passports to join her husband in the US, when her bag is stolen.

Life gets worse and worse as they mount a desperate search for the thief - a very dark book but also unputdownable.

BarbaraBB That sounds so good too 3w
