Say Nice Things About Detroit: A Novel
Say Nice Things About Detroit: A Novel | Scott Lasser
4 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Ambitious and ultimately accomplished . . . a perfect encapsulation of Detroits present moment.Dean Bakopoulos, San Francisco Chronicle Twenty-five years after his high school graduation, David Halpert returns to a place that most people flee. But David is making his own escapefrom his divorce and the death of his son. In Detroit, David learns about the double shooting of his high school girlfriend Natalie and her black half-brother, Dirk. As David becomes involved with Natalies sister, he will discover that both he and his hometown have reasons to hope. As compelling an urban portrait as The Wire and a touching love story, Say Nice Things About Detroit takes place in a racially polarized, economically collapsing city that doesn't seem like a place for rebirth. But as David tries to make sense of the mystery behind Natalies death and puts back the pieces of his own life, he is forced to answer a simple question: if you want to go home again, what do you do if home is Detroit?

1. Suburban Detroit, Michigan
2. It‘s funny, but I‘m good where I‘m at. I love to visit a lot of different places, but Michigan is lovely.
3. The marshes of North Carolina.
4. Typical food can be anything - it‘s pretty diverse around here. But specialties are Detroit deep dish pizza, coney dogs, Vernor‘s, and since Fat Tuesday was not that long ago, paczki. Definitely not for everyday eating. 😂
5. 💕

Yes, I can "say nice things about Detroit" today: a ride down the still charming red brick street where hubs grew up, the beautiful Hurlbut Memorial Gate, pleasant wait staff & delicious shawarma at Bucharest Grill, and this book. Scott Lasser says this is a "story of race, family, home, and dreams gone awry and reimagined." It is a story of heartbreak & hope that will stay with me long after I leave tomorrow. #mittenlitten
