They are the Caradynes, who for over 200 years have bred and trained horses of the finest caliber on Coernanagh. But all is not idyllic at hearth and home. Catriona, the youngest child, longs to ride her family's big jumpers and show horses. Her father Michael, recognizes her gift, but her mother hates the very idea. All is in a stalemate until Lady Selina Healy enters their lives, and provides for Catriona and her father a stunning example of how the reins of power can be held by a glorious, fearless woman. From the Paperback edition.

Found for 50 cents in an antique shop. The cover caught me for obvious reasons. 🐎 But then I saw the author and had to have it. I look forward to digging in.

Selina's husband is the other main plot villian. This book was set in Ireland, 1970, and published in '87. Ireland registered legal provisions for separation in '89 and made constitutional amendment for divorce in '96.

TW, domestic abuse.

Never you mind about the welfare of Cathleen or her pregnancy. There is no mention beyond this scene, although her family act as plot villains throughout the remainder of the book. And Owen did explicitly have sex with her in Februrary. (Although it's questioned whether this was the date of conception; another character comments that she doesn't look six months along.)

*eyeroll* You have a different previously established extramarital relationship that you visited maybe two chapters ago, you ass.

Yes, yes, different times and different culture, but if there was a person in my employ who spoke as thus to my barely-13-year-old daughter, the bitch would be fired in the next line. #grrrr

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this book. Not her usual fantasy...this one is about a horse farm in Ireland. If you are not a horse person, this probably would not be your cup of tea.

MrBook I was raised on a horse farm. Ah, the times I had, lol. 8y
Meghan1 @MrBook, I wasn't raised on one, but I have been around horses most of my life. There's nothing else like it! 8y
