Zooburbia: Meditations on the Wild Animals Among Us | Tai Moses
3 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
To be alienated from animals is to live a life that is not quite whole, contends nature writer Tai Moses in Zooburbia. Urban and suburban residents share our environments with many types of wildlife: squirrels, birds, spiders, and increasingly lizards, deer, and coyote. Many of us crave more contact with wild creatures, and recognize the small and large ways animals enrich our lives, yet dont notice the animals already around us. Zooburbia reveals the reverence that can be felt in the presence of animals and shows how that reverence connects us to a deeper, better part of ourselves. A lively blend of memoir, natural history, and mindfulness practices, Zooburbia makes the case for being mindful and compassionate stewards and students of the wildlife with whom we coexist. With lessons on industriousness, perseverance, presence, exuberance, gratitude, aging, how to let go, and much more, Tai's vignettes share the happy fact that none of us is alone our teachers are right in front of us. We need only go outdoors to find a rapport with the animal kingdom. Zooburbia is a magnifying lens turned to our everyday environment.

Thanks for the #thursdaysurvey tag, @CouronneDhiver !

1. It does!

2. I used to go all the time when I was little, but then they started charging and I had a looooong zoo drought. I last went about three years ago, and they‘d made so many awesome improvements.

3. Red pandas. Also otters. My current zoo doesn‘t have either (unless I missed them), but Auckland Zoo had both.

4. I rode an elephant when I was four or five. Does that count?

Geeklet I‘m also a big red panda fan. They‘re so cute! 5y

Woke up with the same headache I fell asleep with last night. Grateful that I had already taken today off. Hoping this lovely book will make me feel better; I've really enjoyed it so far.

"To be alienated from animals is to live a life that is not quite whole."

The food industry does its damnedest to keep us disconnected from the animals raised and killed for food, but it's easy to forget the wild animals, too. This one is planned for my #LetterZ on a couple of reading challenges. #withusnotforus

RaimeyGallant Have you watched Okja yet? 7y
dariazeoli @RaimeyGallant I'm trying to prepare myself for it! I've heard it's amazing, but difficult to watch some scenes 7y
Cinfhen This sounds fascinating 👍🏻nice choice for today!!! 7y
RaimeyGallant I cried at the 15-minute mark and many times afterward. So moving. The difficult scenes comes much later, but it's an important film that needs to be watched. 7y
dariazeoli @RaimeyGallant I'm hoping it changes a lot of minds about animals! 7y
