In the Barren Ground
In the Barren Ground | Loreth Anne White
6 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
In the Barrens, a vast wilderness in northern Canada bordering the Arctic Circle, night consumes every hour of the winter. Humans are scarce; ferocious predators roam freely. Locals say spirits do, too.Rookie cop Tana Larsson doesn t mind the dark and quiet. Five months pregnant and hoping to escape the mistakes of her past, she takes a post in Twin Rivers, population 320. Maybe here she can find peace and community for her child. But with her superior out of commission, Tana becomes the sole police officer in 17,500 square miles. One bitter night, she gets a call about the fatal wolf mauling of two students, and the only way to reach the remote scene is to enlist the help of the arrogant, irritatingly handsome Cameron Crash O Halloran, a local bush pilot with a shady reputation for smuggling and a past cloaked in shadow. When the macabre scene they uncover suggests violence much more sinister than animal, Tana must trust Crash if she wants to protect the town and herself from the evil that lurks in the frozen dark."

There were too many pieces and layers in my opinion when it comes to this book. Loreth Anne White is still an amazing author and as of now, this is my least favourites. #4star #bookreview #4atarbook

In the Barren ground of the soul nothing can grow.
For here is bitter and cold where the sun hangs low.
Where a midnight caribou mutilation awakens a howl of emptiness with ice where once there was heart.
And it comes with hunger for blood in its mouth.
For, in the Barrens of the soul monsters take toll . . .

Gruesome and gore... I mean the death scene that‘s being described in the 📚... I felt this is a #thriller than #romanticsuspense .. the romance between the characters are mild. And I couldn‘t fathom who‘s the real perp... kind of nice to read if u can stomach what exactly happen.... #lorethannewhite #kindle #ebook

This was creepy to the max. A new Constable has to decide if the deaths of two students in the Alaskan wilderness was due to bears and wolves, creepy local lore, or a two-legged monster. Creepy, creepy, creepy. No Alaska trips for me, thank you very much.

Nebklvr @JenFowler If this wasn't a mystery, it would be right up your alley. Creepy factor would be perfect for you. 7y
ItsAnotherJen That cover definitely looks creepy! 7y

This book is pretty dark to be reading at Christmas time but it's so good I can hardly put it down. I've got tons to do today but maybe tomorrow night I can't start reading a lighter book my daughter recommended! 🎄

#biblioweekend. I started this one while waiting to post the book I had finished on Litsy. Northern Canada, by the Arctic Circle, a couple of researchers are mauled, it's a grizzly attack (and possibly involving a grizzly, or wolves). 😳. But something else is going on. Tana thinks so, and so do I. It's like a gazillion degrees below zero, locals are being evasive, and it's starting to freak me out. 😁😯😳
