Heyday
Heyday | Marnie Woodrow

Two lively girls meet aboard a roller coaster in 1909 and develop a special connection. A modern-day woman grieves the loss of her lesbian partner with whom she was not in love. Heyday is a double-barreled novel that features separate story lines set in different eras, both of which explore the soul's quest for pleasure and the power of love to endure through lifetimes.

This unusual story is told through two unrelated storylines. The first, set in 1909, is the story of the unexpected friendship between two girls who meet on a roller coaster at Hanlan's Point (Toronto's Coney Island). The second is the story of a recently bereaved woman who has lost her partner. The former story was incredibly compelling and was a glimpse into a different era, with its difficulties for women outside the norm. Highly recommended!

This book is centred on Toronto Island. There are two narratives - a historical fiction piece about two girls who meet and fall in love on a roller coaster, and a contemporary story of a woman dealing with the death of her wife. It was sweet and compelling and readable. I love stories set on the Island. I have some issues with the ending but will put them in the comments with a spoiler alert. #queerbooks

Bibliogeekery Re Bette: can we please be more creative than to keep using the traffic lesbian tropes? Seriously, too predictable! Too easy! #weneednewlesbiannarrarives 8y
Bibliogeekery I meant "tragic" not traffic. Autocorrect! 8y

A night alone means digging into a new book. So far I'm enjoying this small press offering. Alternating chapters tell two storylines involving four women, nearly 100 years apart, and set on the Toronto Islands near my home.

Bibliogeekery I'm just about to read this one too! 8y
Gleefulreader @Bibliogeekery I'll be curious to see what you think! I'm about 40% through now. 8y
