Consequences | Penelope Lively

The Booker Prize?winning author?s sweeping saga of three generations of women ?One of the most accomplished writers of fiction of our day? (The Washington Post ) follows the lives and loves of three women?Lorna, Molly, and Ruth?from World War II?era London to the close of the century. Told in Lively?s incomparable prose, this is a powerful story of growth, death, and renewal, as well as a penetrating look at how the major and minor events of the twentieth century changed lives. By chronicling the choices and consequences that comprise one family?s history, Lively offers an intimate and profound reaffirmation of the force of connection between generations.

Mehso-so

Lively‘s books seem to often be slow burns, but also sort of sad and depressing. I think this was mostly well-written, though the jumping timeline was sometimes confusing. I prefer more dialogue. I also never really felt like I knew these characters….more of an outside looking in vibe.

Pickpick

While not a difficult read, this was not the light book I was expecting. It‘s a slow burn. If it were longer it could be called a family saga or epic. There‘s drama and tragedy, but told at a remove that felt oddly detached, and which isn‘t fully revealed until the end. But then you see what Lively was doing, and it becomes a meditation on space and time, their connections and disconnections, the role of “fate” or “chance” 👇🏻

Lcsmcat and the very root of what makes us who we are. If you find it slow going, or puzzling at the beginning, stick with it. It‘s worth the effort and time. 4y
BookNAround I really like Penelope Lively‘s work. 4y
Lcsmcat @BookNAround I need to read more of her. I‘ve read The Photograph and Moon Tiger, but that‘s all so far. Any recommendations? 4y

My third book of this North Carolina road trip. Not a great weekend for hiking and snow tubing, but great for reading.
