Nurse, Soldier, Spy
Nurse, Soldier, Spy: The Story of Sarah Edmonds, a Civil War Hero | Marissa Moss
8 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
This is the incredible true story of Sarah Emma Edmonds, who dressed as a man and fought in the Civil War. When she was 19, Sarah cut her hair, donned her brother's clothes, and fled from Canada, where her father wanted her to marry an elderly gentleman. In the U.S., she went by the name Frank Thompson and joined the Army to fight the Confederates. She was a nurse working on the battlefield when, because of her heroism, she was asked to serve as a spy. At her death, Edmonds was buried in a military cemetery, in a plot reserved for Civil War veterans the only woman to have this honor.

This was definitely an impulse read at the bookstore, but I find Sarah Edmonds life pretty fascinating and I had never heard of her before. #WinterGames @Clwojick @StayCurious #SlayBells #ImpulseRead (11pts)

This is a great book for young children, but also older children. I would definitely use this book inside my classroom when talking about gender-stereotyping or American history. The illustrations were amazing and I think my students would love this story.

This is a historical fiction book about a Civil War hero. She was a woman who wanted to enter the war so she decided to dress as a man for years. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very interesting because I didn't know a woman was in the actual Civil War back then. The author's notes show real picture of the woman who turned herself into a man to be in the war.

So today's challenge has confirmed that #spynovels just don't hang out at my house. In fact, I think I've only ever read 4 including The Sympathizer, which I'm reading now. But take a look at the huge word "SPY" on the cover of this definitely-not-a-novel-but-spy-related book. That counts for something, right? This one's an interesting biography of Sarah Edmonds for younger readers. #photoadaynov16
