The Collected Poems of Frank O'Hara
The Collected Poems of Frank O'Hara | Frank O'Hara
8 posts | 6 read | 2 reading | 7 to read
Available for the first time in paperback, The Collected Poems of Frank O'Hara reflects the poet's growth as an artist from the earliest dazzling, experimental verses that he began writing in the late 1940s to the years before his accidental death at forty, when his poems became increasingly individual and reflective.

“To / you I offer my hull and the tattered cordage
of my will. The terrible channels where
the wind drives me against the brown lips
of the reeds are not all behind me. Yet
I trust the sanity of my vessel; and
if it sinks, it may well be in answer
to the reasoning of the eternal voices,
the waves which have kept me from reaching you.“ - from “To The Harbormaster“

Remembering Frank O'Hara on his birthday.

so come the winds into our lives and last
longer than despair's sharp snake, crushed before it conquered
so marvellous is not just a poet's greenish namesake
and we live outside his garden in pure tempestuous rights.

My dream was always to have floor to ceiling bookshelves with a ladder like Belle. My husband made my see come true, minus the ladder because our ceilings aren't very high. 😍

Ruthiella What a great husband you have! 😀 (edited) 5y

Besides my prose reading, I‘m trying to get back into reading poetry (armed with a pencil and all the sticky notes). O‘Hara has always been a favorite of mine. “Having a Coke With You” is my all-time favorite love poem because I love how the speaker finds lovable things in really common things (“partly because of my love for you, partly because of your love for yoghurt”). Isn‘t that gorgeous?

keggergoldy I have an earlier edition of his poetry. 😍 6y

"I would rather die for love, but I haven't." From a rare book of Frank O'Hara essays called "Standing Still and Walking in New York." I bought this as a Christmas gift for someone but I am tempted to keep it -- shhh ?
